Today, the Malden Police Department proudly celebrates and congratulates Animal Control Officer Kevin Alkins on his retirement after 27 years of dedicated service to the City of Malden.

Since becoming Malden’s first full-time Animal Control Officer in 1999, Kevin has been a constant and familiar presence throughout our community. Whether responding to calls involving lost dogs, stray cats, injured birds, displaced wildlife, or any creature in need, Kevin approached every situation with compassion, professionalism, patience, and an unwavering commitment to both animals and the people who cared for them.

For nearly three decades, Kevin has been much more than our Animal Control Officer ,he has been a trusted colleague, a valued resource, and a true advocate for animals of every kind. His knowledge, experience, and willingness to help made him someone officers, city employees, residents, and neighboring communities could always count on. No matter the situation, Kevin was ready to lend a hand, offer advice, or answer the call.

Kevin’s impact reaches far beyond his work with the Police Department. Throughout the years, he has generously given back to countless charitable organizations, including his dedicated service with the Aleppo Shriners, continuing his lifelong commitment to helping others and making a difference in the lives of children and families throughout our community.

While Kevin’s daily presence will certainly be missed, his legacy of kindness, service, and compassion will continue to be felt throughout the City of Malden for years to come.

On behalf of the City of Malden, the Malden Police Department, your fellow employees, and the countless furry, feathered, and wild friends whose lives you’ve touched over the past 27 years…

This evening members of the Malden Police Department paid their final respects to Police Commissioner Salvatore “ Butch “ Gennetti.

Officers stood shoulder to shoulder during a walk-through offering a final salute to our commissioner. We are especially grateful to all whom attended including members of our community who were on hand to remember and honor the lifelong public servant.

May he rest in eternal peace. You will not be forgotten.

Corporal Margarito Garza was a Machine Gunner serving with Bravo Co, 1/9 Marines. On July 2nd, 1967 Bravo Co. made contact with at least 4 Battalions of the 90th NVA Regiment outside of Con Thien. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
At 0915, 3rd Platoon came in contact with what they thought was a squad sized element of NVA. 3rd Plt pushed off of Route 561 and were met with fire from all three sides, with heavy artillery to the rear. Cutting them off from 2nd Plt. In less than an hour dozens of Marines had been killed and wounded.

The NVA employed flamethrowers to burn hedgerows near 2nd Plt and smoke out the battle space, forcing the Marines into the open. The NVA closed within the perimeter of 3rd and 2nd Plt. The NVA’s rapid advance forced them to leave wounded and dead. ⁣⁣

Bravos CP was being protected by Garza’s two man machine gun team in a ditch on the side Route 561 up the road from 1st Plt. As the surviving Marines from 3rd and 2nd Plt began to breakout of the kill zone, Garza was ripping into the NVA with his M60.

He cut down fire teams at a time as they rushed across the road and tree line, providing precious seconds of suppression for Marines to make their dash to friendly lines at 1st Plt’s perimeter.⁣⁣

As the main body of the NVA reached the intersection of Route 561 Cpl Garza kept his gun up, by this point he had been last seen wounded 3 times and was surrounded.

The NVA got within hand grenade range of Garza’s position and began throwing Chicom grenades into the ditch and his A-Gunner, Lcpl David Bradley was throwing them back, Garza still slinging lead. He was holding back an entire Battalion with his M60. The last transmission to come from Bravos CP was “I don’t think I’ll be talking to you again, we are being overrun.” ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Marines recalled hearing M16s from the CP fall silent, Garzas M60 still blazing on cyclic. A barrage of AK47s and grenades were heard at his position around noon. His M60 then went silent. Garza along with everyone at the CP was killed.

He was 21 years old. Because of his actions dozens of Marines made it back to 1st Plt’s perimeter to set up a defense and tend to casualties. 84 Marines were killed that day.

We would like to make an effort to see Cpl Garza formally recognized for his actions that day, but we need your help in sharing his story.

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the unexpected passing of Rocky B. Brooks, who was a devoted husband, father, brother, and friend. Rocky’s passing occurred on March 17, 2024, when he was 74 years old, and he was surrounded by his close family members. The "Rock" served as a law enforcement officer with the Malden Police Department for a total of 27 years before he retired.

Our thoughts, prayers, and condolences are with his loved ones.

United States Marine Corps Private First Class Robert Paul Foley was killed in action on February 2, 1968 in Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam. Robert was 19 years old and from Dorchester, Massachusetts. M Co, 3rd Bn, 1st Marines. Remember Robert today. He is an American Hero.🇺🇸
