🚨🗣️New: Thierry Henry on South Korea performance against South Africa and how disappointing they have been after their first game:
After the Czech Republic match, something changed. It was as if the hunger that carried them through that comeback simply evaporated the moment they tasted victory. Football is a game of momentum and mentality. Once they got that result, it felt like complacency crept in like a thief in the night. They stopped playing to win and started playing not to lose. That shift is dangerous at a World Cup, and against South Africa it became fatal.
I was surprised. Genuinely. You don’t leave your best and most experienced player, son on the bench in a game where anything less than a draw could send your World Cup hopes into limbo. Hong Myung-bo said he wanted to use Son’s freshness against tiring legs later. On paper it sounds clever, but in reality it sent a message.
What message does it send to the dressing room when your leader and talisman isn’t trusted to start a must-not-lose match? Son has been South Korea’s heartbeat for years. Bench him and you’re not just resting a player — you’re removing the one man who can drag others with him when things get difficult. And when he came on, he couldn’t find the spark either. That tells me the problem runs deeper than one selection.
The attack looked static. They had quality on the pitch — Lee Kang-in, Hwang Hee-chan, and later Son — but there was no cohesion, no clear plan to stretch South Africa or create overloads.
Starting Oh and then bringing Cho Gue-sung on late felt like they were searching for answers rather than having a clear identity.
When your two most natural goal threats are either not starting or making little impact, you have to ask serious questions about how the team is being set up to score. South Korea looked like a team that hoped something would fall their way rather than forcing the issue. At this level, hope is not a strategy.
It adds salt to the wound. South Africa played with belief, organisation, and clinical edge when it mattered. They took their chance. South Korea, with a higher-ranked squad and more individual quality on paper, looked second-best in mentality.
Losing to a team that is writing its own history while you fade into the background is painful. It highlights the gap between talent and performance on the day. South Africa wanted it more in that moment. That’s the hardest truth for any fan to accept.
It’s deeply disappointing because the talent is there. The players are good enough. But somewhere between the first win and the final group game, they lost the edge that makes good teams dangerous. The mistakes in midfield, the loss of confidence, the passive approach — these are not just tactical issues. They are mental ones.
A team with this much experience should not be hoping for other results to save them as one of the best third-placed teams. They should have controlled their own destiny. Instead, they find themselves in limbo, and that is the direct consequence of playing without the required urgency and conviction when it mattered most.
They need to rediscover their identity and their hunger. Stop overthinking selections and start trusting their best players to lead from the front. Most importantly, they must play every remaining minute like their World Cup depends on it — because right now, it does. Complacency has already cost them once. They cannot afford to let it happen again.
