@sunshinevvn Former LA county engineer here. There’s too many reasons to summarize succinctly.
For my projects, environmental permitting was always the reason we were behind schedule. It opens you up to several more layers of bureaucracy and mandatory public comment periods.
@inversebrah I feel like the value prop for non-RWAs on ETH is bad. Just use Solana for strictly digital assets since it's not important to have abundant trust/security. The value prop for ETH is RWAs/stables and we're in this liminal moment where we're waiting to be ready to tokenize RWAs
@mattyglesias The project was ultimately cleared of any accusations of "irreversible harm" to the environment and has since captured 156 tons of plastic. If it were installed at the beginning of the environmental review, it would have prevented an additional ~200 tons of plastic
@mattyglesias When I was a civil engineer in LA, we wanted to install an automated (solar) trash capture device at the mouth of a big river. All it did was catch floating plastic before it entered the ocean. The Federal, State, and local environmental permits took 5 years and cost us ~$2M.
@kenwheeler Also don’t go to that stupid ass airplane wreck site, just look at the pictures. It was like a mile of getting sandblasted by the wind and then another mile back to the parking lot.
Alternatively, the Icelandic people have perfected the hot dog. Indulge to the point of gluttony.
@kenwheeler Random memories:
- The random lagoons are worth the trek
- Blue Lagoon was like the Carnival Cruise of lagoons
- The greenest, most luscious landscapes
- The miniature horses are fucking hilarious
- Some of the worst food I’ve ever paid for
- Get the insurance on your rental car
