The Hybrid Athlete Trend
Is it the new wave of training?
It's trending all over social media. It has exploded in growth.
The truth? If you have spent enough time looking at the fitness space, it's nothing new.
As someone who has worked with athletes both who are hobbyists, and at an elite level...
And as someone who was an elite athlete myself, I was someone who was also desperately searching for something more than just lifting weights, or going for a run.
Hybrid training as it stands, is basically just combining both of these in a very average way.
You basically have a bodybuilding x powerlifting x running program slapped together.
Which is the fundamental issue behind with how this trend is progressing.
Doing slow jogging, swimming & cycling - is great for longevity & heart health.
But the current 'hybrid athlete' model currently misses:
- Speed & Power Training
- Jumping & Sprinting
- Flexibility Training
- Sport Skill Development
So this is how I suggest setting things up if you are interested in this form of training.
Step 1) 2-4x Strength Training Days that give you the biggest strength & hypertrophy adaptations from the smallest amount of work.
I'd advise each session contain:
- 1 main strength lift for the day.
- Plyometrics for upper or lower body.
- Hypertrophy & robustness building.
Step 2) Integrate a recreational sport or activity which has the largest degree of physical training qualities integrated.
This is why combat sports reigns supreme:
1) You need to have a good foundational gas tank.
2) You need to have speed & power of both the upper & lower body.
3) You need isometric strength for grappling exchanges.
4) You need to have adequate flexibility to get into specific hip, shoulder and spinal positions.
Soccer, basketball & other pick up recreational sports work incredibly well here...
Sports where you need to sprint, change direction, jump, jog, think fast & require fast reaction times.
If you can do this into old age, you're going to maintain a lot of the qualities you had as a young adult.
But to learn a skill that you can use to defend your family & give you a confidence and aura no other sport will give you.... no brainer.
The concept of hybrid training is not new.
Runs in the morning & weight lifting at night has been used for years upon years, there's just been a title added to that type of training.
As MMA grows, there will be a rising interest in those wanting to blend aesthetics with combat, and I am very much looking forward to pioneering this movement.
Which is why YouTube is a huge focus of mine (sub to Combat Therapist) if you haven't already.
you should be obsessed with the basics anon. le-learn squatting, pull ups and push ups and get perfect form. obsess over your 1-2 combo. Quit being stuck in the pentatonic and memorize all of the notes on the fretboard. Write lindy old school aggro DR chops. Send roses to woman. pray simple and meaningful. Listen to lectures over and over again. that's really 80% of being good. the rest i think comes naturally and we call it "sauce". very much thank you for reading.
