Tried to walk my brother through his first onchain transaction last spring. He got to the step where the app told him he needed to go acquire a second token before he could pay for the first thing he'd already decided to buy. He closed the tab and asked me why anyone puts up with this.

I didn't have a good answer. Nobody outside this industry accepts being told they need a different currency before their purchase will process. And here's the uncomfortable part for anyone building on a shared chain: you can't fix that.

Something's been nagging at me and I don't have a clean answer, so I'll just put it here.

The most valuable things I've watched people do in this space leave no trace.

Someone DMs a confused newcomer and saves them from a bad decision. Someone finds a bug and quietly tells the team instead of posting about it. Someone talks a friend out of aping into something ugly at 2am. None of that shows up anywhere. It never has.

To be fair, @NucleusCodes handles this better than anything else I've used, because splitting the picture into activity, content, network and contribution catches far more than a single score ever could. Four angles see things one number is blind to.

But four angles still isn't everything, and I don't think any system gets to everything.

So the thing I actually worry about isn't the scoring being wrong. It's the quieter pull that comes with any measurement: you slowly drift toward what's countable and stop doing the parts nobody can see.

For people who've been using it a while, has it changed what you actually do, or mostly what you post about?

I'm curious whether anyone else has felt that pull, or if it's just me being paranoid about my own habits.

Nobody planned this, but the Canopy testnet has accidentally become the most honest dataset in crypto.

793,000+ virtual chains deployed. Mainnet isn't live. There's no token to farm yet. No grant committee approved any of them, no accelerator picked winners, no VC decided which categories were fundable this cycle.

Which makes it a rare thing to look at:

— what people build when permission isn't required

— what they build before there's money in it

— what they build without a narrative telling them what's hot

Almost everything we've ever seen get built in this space passed through at least one of those filters first. This didn't. It's just what nearly 800,000 people did with an afternoon and no gatekeeper.

I'll admit I don't have a breakdown of what those chains actually are, and I'd love one. My guess is it looks nothing like a VC thesis deck.

If you've deployed something on there, I'm curious what it was. Not the polished version, the actual thing you tried.
