One of the reasons I'm so reluctant to believe that any of the team (including the actors, directors, writers, camera crew, etc. (note, I left out production :D)) would ever harm this show (aka CihAl) is the absolute care taken in the tiniest details.

I mean, take this THREE-minute sequence. Three minutes out of 2-plus hours is literally nothing.

But the loving attention expended here on stitching the character's feelings, the backstory, the emotions they want to evoke in the viewers, and the song is incredible.

Ahmet Kaya's 'yakarim geceleri' is perfect for the moment. A song that's about being unable to stop loving someone depite having lived through hell. About love being torment and comfort, pain and cure - it's absolutely beautiful.

Here's the thing - I'm not a native Turkish speaker, but I understand the language much better than I can speak it, which is why, on rewatching the episode I was blown away how each lyric was devoted to Alya and Cihan specifically, to tell us, the audience, that these two are far from over.

How? Let's start.

The music kicks off the same time as Alya and Cihan's vows and Cihan telling Alya not to make him lose her. This is setting up the scene.

Alya knows she messed up. She knows they promised to fight together and that she was the one to leave so the burden of guilt lies on her.

And that's when the lyrics start.

(Bu aşkın nüshası rüzgarlarda' - A copy of this love will remain in the winds.) This part shows Alya who carries her love, her wounds, and her guilt with her no matter where she is, a lot like the wind. It's wherever you go.

('Aslı bende kalacak' - But its original will remain with me). This part shows us Ciho. The one who claims to have locked up his heart, who has supposedly forgotten the past with Alya and whatever he felt with her. Clearly not. Because as the lyrics make clear, the love is still very much with him, in its original form, without any change.

('Bizi hasret saracak' - Longing will surround us. 'Bulutlar çıldıracak' - The clouds will go mad.) In other words, such a longing surrounds us that neither we nor the sky can bear its grief.

And what do we see during these lyrics? Cihan remembers how happy they were just days before the wedding, how close they were.

The next flashback is Alya telling him 'You overlooked my fear, you overlooked my frailty, I asked you for help, I wanted to take refuge in you...Cihan go!'

So, unlike the man of ice facade Ciho presents to the world, he too bears the guilt of his actions. He sends Alya away when she returns contrite.

('Ayrılık başımı döndürüyor' - Separation makes my head spin. 'Kavuşmayı özlettin' - You made me yearn for reunion.)

We're still focused on Cihan during these lyrics, who's sighing literally, like he's unable to breathe. So, even though he's angry and resentful, his heart keeps longing for Alya. He blames her for the separation, but wants to be reunited at the same time.

('İntiharlar kuşandım' I armed myself with suicides. 'Bu aşkı sen kirlettin' - You stained this love.)

Now, this is interesting becuase what does I armed myself with suicides mean anyway? It's a poetic way of saying I set up my own destruction. And the visual matches too because Alya remembers the phone call where Cihan tells her 'Alya, I won't forgive you this time.'

So, she's aware of the cost of her mistake. She's aware that her sacrificial nature set her up to lose home, and that if their love is broken and wounded today, she's played a big part in it.

('Geçtim borandan kardan' - I passed through blizzards and snow. 'Yitirdim bahçeleri' - I lost the gardens.) We see Alya recall Cihan asking her to leave during these lyrics. Once again, there's that theme of trangression and paradise lost.

So, you can't really say Alya isn't sorry or that she's not aware of her mistake because you can clearly see it here.

She knows she's living the price of her mistake, but does that make the pain any less or the longing less keen? Of course not. That just makes everything much, much worse.

('Ellerimi tutmazsan gülüm' - If you don't hold my hands, my rose. 'Yakarım geceleri' - I'll set the nights on fire.)

And these lyrics right here, this is the backbone of the song and this scene. Because it relates a longing to reach out. This song isn't just about love lost, it's about wanting that love back with an even greater intensity.

Which is why when the verse repeats for the second time, we see Cihan remember when Alya returns and they see each other again for the first time on that heavy day.

So, essentially, what the song, the picturization, the lyrics are trying to tell you is both Alya and Cihan want to 'hold on.'

No matter how hurt, how livid, how guilty they both are, they want the other to reach out and hold their hand. And when you think about Cihan's 'If I ever fall, pick me up' line, it takes the whole thing to another dimension entirely.

All this information was conveyed to us, in a matter of three minutes. With masterful storytelling and music. With the perfect flashback scenes and Ozi and Sinema killing the expressions required.

And no one, absolutely no one, wrote about it. Or appreciated it even though I'm sure it must have taken a massive amount of effort and team work.

So, to end this post, my humble entreaty is, step back from the madness of what ifs and start learning to appreciate what is.
