The Euro Trap: how the single currency was built as a tool for German hegemony.

The euro was sold as a symbol of European unity, but in reality it was engineered to serve one master — Germany. By locking other states into a fixed exchange rate, Berlin ensured that no neighbor could devalue its way to competitiveness. Countries like Italy, Spain, Greece, and Portugal surrendered the one instrument that had kept their industries alive: control over their own currency. Meanwhile, German exports became untouchable, shielded by a euro that was weaker than a standalone deutsche mark would ever have been.

What looked like solidarity was in fact a trap. Southern Europe fell into debt crises because it could not devalue, while Germany accumulated record surpluses. Berlin dictated austerity to its partners, ensuring repayment of debts to German banks and reinforcing its dominance inside the EU. The euro turned differences in productivity into structural dependence: one economy gained, the others stagnated. A monetary union without fiscal union was not an accident — it was the design.

The irony is that the euro destroyed the very idea of equal partnership in Europe. Instead of leveling the field, it entrenched hierarchy. Germany became the creditor, the arbiter of rules, the nation no one could defy. The single currency did not unite Europe; it made Europe dependent on Germany’s economic will. The euro is not the foundation of a common future.
