While cleaning the house I came across this picture of my maternal grandparents. They were farmers.

My grandfather was an amazing man. After he passed we learned that during the Great Depression he had been quietly helping support the neighbors across the road. They had 10 children, and he didn’t want them to lose their farm.

The only condition was that no one was to know. We only found out years later when one of their family members came forward and told us. Not even my Grandmother knew.

Anthropologist Margaret Mead was once asked by a student what she believed was the very first sign of known civilization. The student expected her to talk about a hatchet, perhaps fishhooks, the bow and arrow...

Possibly a building structure, clay pots or grinding stones and knives.

But no.

Mead said that the first sign of civilization in an ancient culture was a thighbone that had been broken and then healed.

Mead explained that in the animal kingdom, if you break your leg, your timely death is assured.

"You cannot run from danger, get to the river for a drink or hunt for food. You are meat for prowling beasts. No animal survives a broken leg long enough for the bone to heal."

A broken thighbone that has healed is evidence that someone has taken time to stay with the one who fell, has bound up the wound, has carried the person to safety and has tended the person through recovery.

"Helping someone else through difficulty is where civilization starts." Mead said.

We are at our very best when we truly help and serve others.

Ryder says he refused to let go of the child because he knew the boy would almost certainly die if he did

Ryder’s father Shane “I almost started crying because how determined he was to save that boy’s life makes me so proud.”

Shockingly, Ryder made ANOTHER rescue that day under circumstances MORE difficult than the ones seen on the viral clip, pulling 2 more people to safety

Ryder has proven to be extremely humble, stating he doesn’t understand all the attention because he was just doing what anyone else would.

Several bystanders went against policy to help Ryder save the drowning boy, but the surf rebuffed them, and they retreated.

Ryder’s parents attribute his incredible water skills to years of playing intense water polo, where he played the position of hole set, which means constantly fighting off opponents. His parents joked about being uncomfortable “with everyone trying to drown our boy”.

Ryder and his family have been involved to the White House by President Trump, where Ryder will receive a civilian award 🥇

The father of the 10-year-old boy who was saved by lifeguard Ryder Williams in Santa Cruz says his son was seconds from dying.

Sumit Rai says his son, Nathaniel, lost consciousness during the incident & says his daughter is traumatized after witnessing what happened.

"Ryder's only 16 years old himself. He's a teenager and for him to take that kind of leadership and go out and have that type of courage and bravery to go out and save someone else's life is remarkable, and I cannot thank him enough," Rai said.

"We got lucky that he didn't die, but this outcome could've been very different. I am incredibly and extraordinarily grateful to the lifeguard. He's the only reason that my son is alive."

Falling Slowly

I'm heartbroken to hear of the passing of Glen Hansard. His music has been the soundtrack to my life for as long as I can remember.

This was one of the very first pieces I shared here during the Covid pandemic. I remember how nervous I felt posting it. Not long afterwards, I received a message from Glen himself telling me he loved my version. Those few kind words, coming from an artist I admired so deeply, meant more than I can say. They gave me the confidence to keep sharing my music, and they played a significant part in the path that followed.

So many evenings were spent lying on the floor of my cottage beside the fire with my dog Nisha, listening to Glen's songs. I still can't quite believe he's gone.

This is Falling Slowly from the film Once. Glen and his co-star, Markéta Irglová, won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2008.

The world feels quieter today. My heart goes out to his family, his friends, and to everyone whose life was touched by his music. I'll be listening to his songs for the rest of my life.
