A century ago, in 1925, Jerusalem witnessed the founding of its first Armenian community center: the Jerusalem Armenian Benevolent Union (JABU).

The Save the ArQ movement had the honor of attending the ceremony marking the Union’s centenary. For generations, the JABU has stood beside its members — descendants of families whose roots in Jerusalem stretch back millennia, proudly known as the Kaghakatsiz (locals).

This ancient and steadfast community has tirelessly worked to preserve the Armenian presence in Jerusalem, fortify the Armenian Quarter, and uphold the sacred traditions of the Church. A hundred years on, we pay tribute to their enduring devotion to Armenian identity, culture, and history — a legacy that continues to inspire, and one that rightfully commands both respect and admiration.

On Thursday, May 8, 2025, during a special visit to Amman, Jordan, His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia, held an audience with the founders of the Save The ArQ movement, Hagop Djernazian and Setrag Balian—marking an unprecedented encounter.

During the meeting, His Holiness was briefed on the ongoing struggle to nullify the illegal land deal concerning the historic Armenian Gardens—also known as the Cows’ Garden—in Jerusalem. The discussion also addressed the broader challenges currently facing the Armenian Patriarchate and the local Armenian community.

His Holiness and the young leaders underscored the urgent need for a unified, global Armenian effort to safeguard the 1,700-year-old Armenian presence in Jerusalem. They reaffirmed the importance of coordinated action to fully annul the land agreement and to protect Armenian heritage and rights in the Holy City.
