The story of our journey to justice for Alice, captured so eloquently here by @jamesmelley & @AlisonHoltBBC, who followed what was a marathon trial at the Old Bailey, with all its twists & turns. Originally scheduled for 9 weeks, it lasted over 7 months:

"We are actually measured against our bed occupancy and our length of stay - we are not actually measured on whether or not we get people well"

This morning a song Alice sang on the phone to me from hospital a few days before she died, came on in the hotel where we’re staying. I had to walk away, as I always do when this song takes me off guard. But still, I felt her presence draw close to me on this Easter Sunday 🌼💞🌅
If MH professionals are experiencing compassion fatigue, they should get help, take time out, or get another job. But never project destructive negativity & emotional harm onto patients who deserve to be shown, kindness, encouragement & hope, especially in their darkest moments.
When Alice was readmitted in Feb 2015 she asked a staff member she’d known for 3 years: “Do you think I can get better?”. They said “No”. Alice then asked: “Have you given up on me?” Their reply: “Yes”. MH staff should think very carefully about choosing words to heal not harm.🧵
A person whose role was to provide care & safety, told a depressed patient at risk they didn’t think she would get better & they’d given up on her. Deep damage is done to a patient in such a vulnerable state, if those meant to care for them extinguish any small flame of hope 🪔.
🧵 For someone offering “peer support” this is a ridiculously paternalistic view: clinicians confer privately, reach a conclusion alone, & then inform the patient who they are. How delightfully mid-century. Are you also advocating for the reopening of asylums? Lobotomies? 🤔 1/31
"A dangerous culture harbouring a lack of care"-a coroner's description of a mental health ward where a 20-yr-old woman died. @jamesmelley & I have been looking at 3 sudden deaths at the private hospital. It says it's made improvements.
Three women died unexpectedly in two years at a privately run mental health hospital where staff falsified records @AlisonHoltBBC

@lizanelly1 So sorry to hear you went through this when you were heavily pregnant & no doubt you would also be feeling very protective & anxious in that environment. Staff should have done everything to safeguard you & ensure you didn’t feel intimidated - & not cause you further distress 😔.
Alice was clearly by no means the only victim of such heinous behaviour & ill treatment within the confines of an acute NHS mental health ward, supposedly a place of care & safety. In reality this was a death trap where she paid the price with her precious & beautiful life 💔 4/4
My heart goes out to any women, who like Alice, instead of receiving diligent compassionate care, ever had to endure callous antipathy, heartless contempt, abuse, neglect or were made to feel in any way worthless, intimidated or dehumanised whilst being patients on this ward: 1/4
This is a scandalous, shameless travesty, devoid of accountability. & the Trust should be ashamed of their gaslighting, blame-shifting conduct through recent trial proceedings. The message this sends is the life & death of a 22 yr old MH patient is inconsequential to them. 3/4
“The evidence at the inquest reflected very poor appreciation of the risks posed to Mrs Adeleyu by her mentally unwell adult son. This poor appreciation of risk was observed at all levels of clinical staff.”

NELFT & ELFT: serious failings led to Unlawful Killing inquest verdict:
‘On Thursday (March 5) East London Coroner Nadia Persaud issued a scathing Prevent Future Deaths report criticising North East London Foundation NHS Trust (NELFT) and East London Foundation NHS Trust (ELFT)
“These consisted of insufficient communication regarding the transfer of care and inadequate engagement with Caroline’s family for a broader risk assessment.”’
The PFD by Nadia Persaud sets out a litany of appalling, preventable, lethal failings by both NELFT & ELFT.
