Teachers spend their entire careers looking after, nurturing and worrying about the welfare of children not their own but who are entrusted to their care.

The teacher is a role model and foremost instiller of values besides the parent and in their communities, teachers are influential opinion shapers.

Since 2022, the Government has made significant strides towards improving the education sector including matters of teacher welfare.

We have employed a historic number of 100,000 teachers, built 23,000 classrooms, introduced key reforms to tertiary education that has resulted in the increase of enrollment in these institutions from 297,000 students in 2022 to 718,000 currently.

We have brought clarity to the Competence Based Education and Training (CBET), employed 3,300 tertiary institution teachers, introduced a new student centred University funding model to replace the previous one that funded universities based on the cost of the courses they were offering.

Currently 1,600 laboratories are under construction mainly in historically disadvantaged schools to promote better results in science subjects.

Engaged with 5,000 teachers who are members of the Kenya Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Union drawn from Meru County with delegates from across Kenya.

Urged them to use their influence as instillers of values to help their students to develop discipline, hard work, patriotism and peaceful resolution of disputes, to check on the creeping culture of violence in the resolution of family, community and political issues.

Encouraged them to use their position of vantage to inform their communities on the important issues of our national life, and not to allow disinformation and misinformation to prey on the society to distort facts for selfish ends detrimental to national interests.

Loss of a loved one is painful, but the loss of a child is a most terrible and devastating experience for a parent.

In an emotional ceremony full of grief, joined my friend of many years Kiraitu Murungi and his family for the final farewell to his last born daughter Anita Kendi.

Delivered the condolences of President William Ruto to the family and to the residents of Kionyo, South Imenti.
