We’re back online! For those of you who don’t know us, 30 Bird is a cutting-edge arts company exploring new territories at the boundaries of art, design, science and cross-cultural experience.
What connects Lenin, Frankie Goes to Hollywood and Ritalin?
In 1957 USSR launched Sputnik. In 1984 Frankie Goes to Hollywood released Two Tribes. In 2011 Antony swallowed Ritalin.
Win the Space Race, win the Cold War. No progressive education. Put children to productive use.
A snippet of our film at (In)somnia Lab: Sputnik and the Nazi anti-smoking campaign. Ritalin, Edward Hopper and Ondina Valla’s fascist salute, to the tune of Kalinka sung by the Red Army. 2021: Trump cronies storming the Capitol Building, echoes of the 1923 Nazis' failed coup.
Does the guilt of modern Homo insomnius - Kafka's "sleepless man" - come from the tasks not finished, the perfection not achieved, in our busy work-obsessed lives?
Sleep to work or work to sleep? John Carpenter's parody of advertising in his 1988 film "They Live" got us thinking about the purpose of sleep: an instrument for higher productivity or an essential pleasure?
We're looking at the commercialisation of sleep and concepts such as the neoliberal body. What was once an ordinary part of human existence is now a juicy market opportunity.
Why can't you sleep?
Not sleeping can be a torment, but it may also act as an appeal for some other form of pain, for more complex social and personal suffering to be recognised.
If you can’t sleep…
If you want to make a film about why you can’t sleep…

#InsomniaLab is an inclusive project. We welcome those who identify themselves with being Black, South Asian, East Asian, West Asian, disabled, LGBTQIA+, White, Insomniac and those who don’t identify themselves with any of these categories.
What is insomnia?
A sleep disorder that can make it hard to fall asleep, hard to stay asleep, or cause you to wake up too early and not be able to get back to sleep. You may still feel tired when you wake up.
#InsomniaLab project is inspired by “Barbara’s Eyes”, a short story by @MehrdadSeyf: a tale of one year of insomnia in London and Paris in 1984, interrupted by visits to repertory cinemas, French songs and falling in love with the wrong girl.
We are grateful to all our supporters! We couldn’t have developed cutting edge work for over 20 years without ongoing fundraising and private donations. Thank you all for your support!

Our latest project is called #InsomniaLab. We collect stories of insomnia, anything about your sleepless nights. We work with you and your material to create a film.
Our work aims to draw on & reflect the full range of backgrounds & perspectives to be found in society. We are therefore keen to explore a variety of experiences informed by insomnia.
