Retired Lt. Col. Perry Blackburn, US Army Green Beret, and one of the first Americans into Afghanistan after 9/11.
When the planes hit the towers, then-Major Blackburn was training with 5th Special Forces Group and was recalled to Fort Campbell immediately. Within weeks his 12-man team, ODA 555, “Triple Nickel,” was on the ground in Khost near the Pakistan border, one of the very first boots on the ground elements of the entire war.
The mission was pure unconventional warfare, link up with the CIA, the local warlords, and the Northern Alliance, and bring American airpower down on the Taliban. No Humvees, no heavy equipment. Only Toyota trucks, ATVs, and horses.
As Blackburn put it, chiseled Americans on small horses looked glorious but was painful work, and they’d have much rather been in trucks. They did it anyway, because that’s what it took to get to the enemy. The only maps available were Russian. The Afghans used none at all.
The men grew beards and dressed like locals, blending in so completely they had to wear ball caps so other Americans could identify them. It remains the most successful unconventional warfare campaign in modern history.
Blackburn never stopped. When Kabul fell in 2021 he founded AFGfree and threw himself into evacuating Afghan allies and interpreters, the men his community had fought beside for twenty years. Then he went to Ukraine, delivering supplies into denied areas and helping the Territorial Defense build out their train the trainers program.
When fellow Green Beret Nicholas Maimer was killed in Ukraine in 2023, his remains fell into the hands of the Wagner Group. Blackburn made it his personal mission to bring him home, because as he put it, treating the dead with dignity and returning them to their families is what the profession of arms demands of us.

@PatMcAfeeShow …speaking of QB development, you mentioned it the other day …@PatrickMahomes spent a year behind Alex Smith and attributes a lot of his success to that “internship”.

So Tiger just draws a dead-straight line on his ball and doesn’t use a tool or anything to help. Just dead straight freehand. I’m in shock. (Shout-out @A_R_Goldberg for pointing this out)
