A solar eclipse, viewed unsafely, can result in vision loss (solar retinopathy).
But did you know an eclipse nearly 80 years ago (during WWII) inspired the lasers used in #ophthalmology?
I had the chance to share that amazing story this week @uiowaeye morning rounds.

Look out for “SOPLA” in cases of unexplained vision loss👇
Congrats to Dr. Boyce, the diligent clinician scientist shown below, as esteemed first author.
We had many lab meetings over several years to put this paper together.
He sorted out the science…I balanced lenses 🤣
As learners, we walk in the shoes of those who have gone before. In doing so, we learn the way.
Congrats to retina fellows Dr. Bhuyan and Dr. Jamshidi on tremendous growth @uiowaeye.
They were thrilled to get custom colored FlyEase OR shoes for the next steps of their journey!
Very happy to share our study of human photoreceptor cell development finally out today in @jclinicalinvest! The cover image is an example of the sort of retinal organoids we used to model the inherited disease caused by NR2E3 variants. Check out those photoreceptors!!
Resident and Fellow Research Day is the “most important day on our academic calendar” @uiowaeye.
Congratulations to all the trainees and their faculty mentors for fantastic presentations today.
It was a great day celebrating our dedication to progress in #ophthalmology!
ARVO’s annual meeting is not only the largest vision research gathering in the world — but also a yearly reminder that science advances through relationships as much as experiments.
Great to see such progress in the field and to share smiles, enthusiasm, and ideas. #ARVO2024
@NoorusabahAhmad@ARVOinfo@uiowaeye@andrewpouw What a difference a year makes — thanks to your great work and dedication. Great to see you guiding others around the meeting like an ARVO pro!
We can't wait to see everyone at #ARVO2024! Be sure to say hello 👋 and check out the vision research 👁️ taking place at @uiowa: https://t.co/R70iuN0rtt
@SRodsAndCones@uiowaeye@cataractsurgery@CUEyeCenter Congrats on the honor. Great to join this prestigious group of Heed fellows — but hard to top the gratitude of many patients who were blind and now see, all thanks to your tremendous efforts in fighting for health equity. Grateful to be a part of your journey. Onward!
I’ve come out of Twitter/X hibernation to say the following:
Bilal cares about making the world better for others. We are lucky to have him as a resident at Iowa.
(This podcast is just me rambling.)
New episode of The Resident Journey with Dr. Ian Han (@3Y3MD) on tips for transioning as a senior resident and retinal imaging interpretation.

@honestlybilal@LeeGrace_05@IowaMed Great case with “burn in your brain” images to remember. Placoid choroiditis has a narrow differential, including syphilis.
Great job by @LeeGrace_05 and team. Grace is not only super smart but incredibly humble and kind — keep a look out for her on the residency trail!
@honestlybilal@uiowaeye@highhopemyope Great to have @honestlybilal and @highhopemyope on the retina rotation. Our patients benefitted greatly, and it was awesome to watch you grow in knowledge and experience. Thanks for bringing a great attitude, effort, and energy everyday!
Great job by @uiowaeye resident @agarzareyes on this imaging report about a very peculiar OPL appearance in Wolfram (DIDMOAD) syndrome.
To learn more, check out a nice multicenter case series in @AAOjournal by @pearsekeane @MichelMichaelid and colleagues:

A very peculiar outer plexiform layer can be seen in autosomal dominant Wolfram syndrome. Recognizing this OCT appearance may help guide diagnosis and molecular testing in this rare condition. @3Y3MD; @agarzareyes https://t.co/SqDsWm2qUO
Thanks @NEIDirector for the mention 🙏
Our team’s current AAV paradigm:
1) Human explants/organoids for tropism+transduction

2) Confirm tropism in animal models+ensure no toxicity

3) Assess inflammation to choose vector+route ⬇️
Limiting ocular inflammation is a challenge in gene therapy delivery. This #NEIfunded research finds AAV serotype and delivery routes mediate the degree of inflammation.

Artificial intelligence vs. actual intelligence?
Thoughts on ChatGPT vs. my genius first grade daughter in this month’s @OphthTimes 👀 editorial:
“Retinator III: Rise of the (Writing) Machines.”
Scribo, ergo sum!
Fear not, my fellow humans. Our future is safe! #ophthotwitter
Start a brewery in the middle of the pandemic and make a special IPA to raise awareness and funds for vision research?
Sure thing! Thanks to “courage” and the “power of the human spirit.”
Thanks to @BlindButcherBru + @BackpocketBrew for supporting our mission to cure blindness!
