Turning leftovers into lifelines 🥔💚
During their club planning meeting, members at the Kensington 4-H Club chose to take on another Agri-Food Challenge — this time focused on reducing food waste and supporting local food security.
With permission from a local seed potato farm, youth followed behind the digger to glean potatoes left in the field before they could go to waste. Following strict sanitation protocols to protect the crop, members gathered, bagged, and delivered the fresh potatoes directly to the Kensington Food Bank.
In total, 13 members, leaders, family volunteers and farmer Andrew MacMurdo and his wife Marilyn worked together to ensure healthy food reached families who need it most.
This project shows how simple ideas can make a real difference —supporting farmers, reducing waste, and strengthening communities.

As part of the AgriFood Challenge, the Balmoral 4-H Club members dove into the world of pollinators with a special beekeeper presentation where they learned:
🍯 How bees pollinate and make honey
🐝 How bee colonies reproduce
⚠️ The threats facing pollinators
🌎 Why bees are essential to our food supply
Members then rolled up their sleeves to build their own bee hotels and created “Save the Pollinators” gift packages — complete with Proud to Bee a 4-H’er seed packets — to share with family members at Christmas.
By equipping 35 youth with the knowledge and tools to protect pollinators, this project is creating a ripple effect that supports agriculture, biodiversity, and our future food systems.
That’s the power of learning by doing. 💚

The Sault Ste. Marie 4-H Club (ON) turned two garden plots into a powerful lesson in community impact through their project, “Common Ground at Emmanuel Community Garden.” From May to September 2025, members:
✔ Planned and planted their own fruits and vegetables
✔ Took turns maintaining the garden all summer
✔ Harvested and donated fresh produce All donations went to Save Our Young Adults (SOYA), a grassroots organization serving 500 people per week who are experiencing housing and food insecurity.
Through hands-on learning, youth gained real-world experience in gardening, sustainability, and understanding food insecurity — while making a tangible difference in their community. This is what the AgriFood Challenge is all about. 🌎💚
