22 September 2000. Death of Saburo Sakai (b 25 August 1916). 28 victory Imperial Japanese Navy WW2 Mitsubishi A6M Zero ace. During the Battle of Guadalcanal (7 August 1942) he was shot in the face, blinding his right eye and paralyzing the left side of his body. Despite these injuries, he flew his damaged Zero 560 miles over the open ocean for nearly 5 hours back to his base at Rabaul.
