A striking photograph from 1954 shows Admiral Nelson’s flagship, HMS Victory, covered in snow at Portsmouth Dockyard. The image captures the famed 18th-century warship in a rare moment of winter calm at its permanent berth in Hampshire, England. At the time, the vessel was undergoing extensive postwar restoration efforts to address decades of deterioration and severe wood rot.
Today, HMS Victory remains the world’s oldest commissioned warship and serves as a living museum. The photograph continues to be widely admired by history enthusiasts for the striking contrast it presents between the ship’s age-old rigging and the surrounding modern naval facilities.
