Tornado is back in Darlington!
You can see the A1 up close at our May open day. Visit us on Bank Holiday Monday 4th May for free, with access through Hopetown!
The Works is open 10.00-15.00hrs.
This weekend there has been a slight change at the front of Tornado. In a style that A1’s were seen in before withdrawal the bright work on the smokebox door has been painted.
We have not made this change before & hope you enjoy seeing a different aspect of the A1 class.
The team have been preparing Tornado for tomorrow’s trip to Carlisle. In the morning, the A1 will leave Tyseley on Vintage Train’s ‘Shap Mountaineer’ taking passengers over some of the most challenging inclines and beautiful terrain on the British rail network.
🚂 The dream became reality.
LNER Class A1 60163 Tornado was the first brand-new main line steam locomotive built in Britain for almost 50 years.
Today it continues to inspire thousands — but ongoing support keeps it steaming.

In an added bonus this Open Weekend, on Saturday, Tornado will be in steam at Darlington Locomotive Works. Come down between 10.00 and 15.00hrs and visit the footplate!
Following completion of the ‘cold exam’ element of the annual recertification process the locomotive has been moved outside for the ‘hot exam’ to take place. For this the locomotive needs to be in steam so the fire has been lit today.
