Happy 99th birthday to Bill Casassa!

In 1944, after seventeen weeks of “Tank Destroyer” training in North Camp Hood, Texas, Bill was assigned to 638th Tank Destroyer Battalion at Camp Gruber, Oklahoma. He shipped overseas September 4, 1944, the day before his 19th birthday. He landed in France on September 15. His first day of combat was in support of the 84th Infantry Division’s attack on the Siegfried Line at Geilenkirchen in November 1944. Bill fought through the Rhineland, Ardenne, and Central European campaigns, serving 171 consecutive days in combat. Almost two months after VE Day, Bill returned to the United States to prepare for an amphibious invasion of Japan, an invasion that never came.

It is an honor to have spent time with Bill in Normandy for the 78th and 80th D-Day commemoration events with the Best Defense Foundation @bestdefense_ and it made my day to call and wish him a happy birthday today.
