@sandylocks@americanacad It was incredibly inspiring to hear from you at the induction ceremony this weekend! Your address was empowering for inductees and to members of staff like me. Voices like yours speak truth to power and I feel so energized to work at an institution honoring your work. Thank you!
Has any #legalaid or #court organization engaged or worked with the American Federation of State, County, & Municipal Employees (@AFSCME on a #civiljustice initiative/project? #accesstojustice#a2j any links I could follow to dig in?
I guess my question is more, how does the justice system do what it can, and what other aspects of USA life need interventions to improve trust in law/courts/local services? I don’t think it’s all on the justice system’s to improve trust/faith in our institutions
I know there’s research from NCSC, IAALS, and Pew on public trust & confidence, AND I’m curious w/ #accesstojustice, #civiljustice, #a2jtech, #justicetech think are actionable steps. Its not just @ courts and avail. legal help — there’s distrust in facts, agencies, voting etc.
@natalalleycat ALSO – when someone is turned away from legal services (via legal aid/lawyer & bc cost or availability), they have to turn to what exists in their jurisdiction: the BASELINE assistance. Self-help/guidelines/tech tools are baseline, not legal services.
@natalalleycat Can't make this! BUT - I totally think that we need to shift the convo. People that represent themselves ARE Litigants and those with attorney's are Represented Litigants. We keep qualifying what it means to not have an attorney, but it is in fact the status quo.
@BamLegal Great idea! I'd love to see a list too. 1 challenge is the "type of legal tech" you seek. legal tech-users can be: consumers, law firms, legal aid orgs, courts, bar programs, libraries, community or nonprofit advocacy orgs, etc. They each have conference "circuits" worth tracking
