The Federal Government could not provide sufficient evidence to auditors showing that N33.75 billion in cash transfers paid to more than 3.29 million vulnerable households in 2023 reached genuine beneficiaries, according to the Auditor-General for the Federation.
The revelation was contained in the Auditor-General’s 2024 Annual Report on Non-Compliance/Internal Control Weaknesses in Ministries, Departments and Agencies, which reviewed transactions at the National Cash Transfer Office in Abuja.
According to the report, electronic transfers totalling N33.751 billion were made to 3,295,207 households and beneficiaries listed on the National Social Register and enrolled on the National Beneficiary Register across 35 states in 2023.
However, auditors reportedly found that the payment vouchers did not contain the full details of beneficiaries, while the required Remita statement for reconciling those who received the funds with beneficiaries listed on the registers was not presented.
The Auditor-General said the missing records prevented auditors from properly authenticating the payments and determining whether the recipients were genuine beneficiaries.
The report also stated that attempts by auditors to obtain the payment records were unsuccessful.
The audit findings have raised fresh questions about transparency, accountability and verification in Nigeria’s social intervention programmes, particularly the distribution of funds meant for vulnerable citizens.
What do you make of this audit finding? 🇳🇬
