BUJUMBURA – BURUNDI, 30 JUNE 2026 (ACCOSCA) – Guided by its vision of promoting Financial Inclusion across Africa through Strong and Sustainable Cooperative financial systems, ACCOSCA continues to trailblaze its way into the books of history as an institution strengthening credit unions in Africa to expand access to quality financial services, improve the livelihoods of millions of Africans, and unlock greater socio-economic opportunities for individuals, families, and communities through the cooperative business model.
The ACCOSCA leadership is currently leading a high-level fact-finding mission in Bujumbura - Burundi, engaging directly with credit union leadership, assessing institutional realities and mapping out strategies to accelerate the growth and professionalization of Burundi's cooperative and credit union sector.
Led by ACCOSCA Executive Director, George Ombado, alongside Grace Watsiera - Executive Director of the African Cooperative Development Foundation (ACDF), the delegation held consultative engagements with the leadership of CECADM - Coopérative d'Épargne et de Crédit pour l'Auto-Développement des Militaires - one of Burundi's largest member-owned financial
Hosted by CECADM Board Chairperson Ninteretse Padon, Vice Chairperson Hakorimana Désiré, and Chief Executive Officer Iradukunda Jean Marie, the visit seeks to identify concrete empowerment strategies for credit unions in Burundi: examining governance structures, operational models, and membership growth pathways that ACCOSCA can support through targeted technical assistance and continental expertise.
Beyond institutional engagements, the mission also demonstrated the movement's commitment to community transformation. Through Project Blossom, the ACCOSCA and ACDF leadership donated sanitary kits to more than 300 students at Nyabiraba Secondary School, empowering young girls to pursue their education with dignity and confidence.
ACCOSCA's role is continental in scope and deliberate in focus: to provide the leadership, standards, and support that credit unions across Africa require to build sound institutions, serve their members well, and contribute measurably to the socio-economic development of their countries.
Stand by for more updates from Bujumbura.

NAIROBI, KENYA – 25 JUNE 2026 (ACDF) – Advancing gender equality remains a core institutional priority for the Africa Cooperative Development Foundation (ACDF), shaping its efforts to develop transformative leaders and strengthen inclusive institutions across Africa.
Through the 2026 Inclusive Citizens "Women of Influence" Initiative, ACDF brought together female leaders and connected them with distinguished role models whose leadership journeys underscored the values of integrity, accountability, and service.
The graduating cohort engaged with Rotarian Wairimu Njage, District Governor of Rotary International District 9212, whose towering servant leadership across Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea, and South Sudan demonstrates the power of purpose-driven service.
Participants also benefited from the insights of Faith Odhiambo, former President of the Law Society of Kenya, whose reflections on leadership and influence left a lasting impression.
Further, the graduating cohort gained practical perspectives from Cyprian Basing (AADE, I-CUDE), Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Cooperative Credit Unions Association (Ghana), and Hassani Mnyone (ADE), Chief Executive Officer of Sccult 1992 Ltd (Tanzania), who shared lessons on building strong, well-governed, and inclusive cooperative institutions.
ACDF extends its sincere appreciation to the Kenya National Police DT SACCO for hosting the cohort and showcasing the impact of member-centered and visionary leadership in practice.
The Inclusive Citizens "Women of Influence" Program continues to empower women leaders who are transforming institutions, uplifting communities, and advancing Africa’s development—one leader at a time.

NAIROBI, KENYA, 25 JUNE 2026 (ACDF) – The ACCOSCA Development Foundation (ACDF) proudly celebrates the graduation of 31 exceptional female credit union leaders from 7 African countries who successfully completed the 2026 Inclusive Citizens: Women of Influence Program in Nairobi, Kenya.
The program is a flagship leadership initiative by ACDF designed to strengthen the capacity of women leaders within Africa’s cooperative and credit union movement, amplify their voices in governance and policy spaces, and advance gender-responsive leadership across the sector.
By investing in women’s leadership, ACDF is helping to build stronger, more inclusive, and more representative cooperative institutions that better serve their members and communities.
Through leadership development, peer learning, and continental networking, participants are empowered not only to lead but to influence change and shape the future of the African cooperative movement. This achievement reflects ACDF’s commitment to accelerating gender equality and fostering inclusive citizen leadership across Africa.
The ACCOSCA Development Foundation (ACDF) extends its sincere appreciation to our valued partners, the @AACUC1 and the German Sparkassenstiftung Eastern Africa, whose generous support made this transformative program possible.
Congratulations to the 2026 Women of Influence graduating cohort. May your leadership continue to inspire generations and drive meaningful change across Africa! #PeopleHelpingPeople || https://t.co/uYLStK2OWA ||
It was an honour to deliver a Special Address at the Inclusive Citizens: Women of Influence Program, convened by the African Confederation of Cooperative Savings and Credit Associations @accosca in Nairobi.
The cooperative sector governs over 1.156 trillion Kenyan shillings in member savings across Kenya alone. Yet women, youth, persons with disabilities, and other marginalised groups continue to be underserved by financial products and policies that were simply not designed with them in mind.
That is the conversation ACCOSCA is courageously leading: how do we build financial systems that leave no one behind? How do we design cooperative products that meet people where they are, not where policy assumes them to be?
Inclusion is not a favour extended to the marginalized. It is the condition under which all of us can build, grow, and thrive together.
Grateful to the SACCO leaders from across Africa who gathered for this program. The work you are doing to strengthen inclusive financial ecosystems on this continent is work that changes lives.

LUSAKA – ZAMBIA, 15 JUNE 2026 (ACCOSCA) – Since its inception in June 2014, the African Development Educators (ADE) Programme has established itself as a leading platform for cooperative excellence and transformational learning across Africa.
The programme's growing stature and enduring impact have attracted an increasing number of senior cooperative executives, policymakers, regulators, and government officials who value its world-class learning experience and innovative approaches to institutional transformation and community empowerment.
The ACCOSCA Academy was privileged to welcome Commissioner Daisy Susan Katantamalundu, Commissioner for Administration and Third-in-Command of the Zambia Police Service, as well as a Board Member of the Zambia Police Thrift SACCO, who was among the ADE Class of Lusaka graduating cohort. Her participation confirms the growing uptake of the ADE training among eminent cooperative leaders in Africa.
As the ADE network continues to expand across the continent and beyond, it remains steadfast in its commitment to equipping leaders with the knowledge, competencies, and global perspectives required to drive meaningful change and create lasting impact within their institutions, communities, and nations.
ACCOSCA conveys its profound appreciation to NASCU - National Association of Savings and Credit Unions; the National Association in Zambia, for facilitating the Commissioner's participation in the ADE Class, consequently advancing our shared vision of sustainable socio-economic transformation across Africa.

ACCOSCA Stands in Solidarity with the Cooperative Fraternity and Families Affected by Utumishi Girls Academy Tragedy
NAIVASHA – KENYA, 28 MAY 2026 (ACCOSCA) - On behalf of the Board and Management of ACCOSCA, we extend our deepest condolences to the families, friends, students, staff, and the entire Utumishi Girls Academy community following the devastating fire tragedy in Kenya.
This heartbreaking incident has caused immense pain and sorrow, not only to the affected families but also to the wider cooperative fraternity across Africa that fondly remembers Utumishi Girls Academy for hosting delegates during the 2024 SACCA Congress.
The school has continued to benefit from the goodwill and sustained support of credit unions in the region, notably the Kenya National Police DT SACCO @police_sacco, whose partnership and support has played a significant role in advancing the institution’s development and welfare. Utumishi Girls Academy became part of a shared legacy of hope and sustainability through the planting of over 10,000 trees alongside members of the African cooperative movement during the 2024 SACCA Congress.
Today, we mourn the loss of young, bright, and promising lives whose futures were tragically cut short. During this difficult moment, we stand in solidarity with all those affected and convey our sincere sympathies to every family carrying the weight of this profound loss.
May the memories of the departed continue to inspire strength and unity, and may comfort, healing, and peace be granted to all who grieve.

As she once said, “The Development Educators Program changes lives in multiple ways.” She lived these words, leaving a lasting imprint on all she touched.
Through her dedication to initiatives such as America Friends for Kenya, supporting the building of libraries, Kathy demonstrated a life committed to service, learning, and global solidarity.
On behalf of the ACCOSCA Board and Management, we salute and celebrate a life profoundly well lived. Her legacy will continue to inspire us to lead with purpose, serve with compassion, and transform the world. #PeopleHelpingPeople || https://t.co/uYLStK2OWA ||
