St Alphonsus Liguori (1696-1787), Doctor of the Church - known as the Doctor of Moral Theology, patron of confessors, and Founder of the Redemptorists, was born in Marianelli near Naples in Italy. By the age of 16 St Alphonsus received his doctorate in both canon and civil law and practised law until he was 24. He abandoned the legal profession and decided to become a priest after losing an important case owing to an oversight. He joined the Oratorians and was ordained in 1726. After meeting Bishop Thomas Falcoia and Sister Mary Celeste in 1730, he helped found the Redemptorines in 1731 according to the rule Sr Mary Celeste had been given in a vision. St Alphonsus founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer - the Redemptorists - in 1732 however after all but one of its members left to form their own Congregation, St Alphonsus set-up a second Congregation in 1734.

According to the Redemptorist International website: ‘the Redemptorist Vocation is a call that drives us to serve the poorest and most abandoned of our times so that, like the Redeemer himself, we can give new life to people, restoring them to their dignity as a human person, a creature loved by God!’

St Peter (1 Peter 1:14-16) and the Holy Father, Pope Leo, remind us we are all called to be holy.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) #1832 states that: the fruits of the Spirit are perfections that the Holy Spirit forms in us as the first fruits of eternal glory. By "the sacrament of Confirmation, [the baptized] …are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit (CCC #1285).

In St Paul’s Letter to the Galatians, the fruit of the Spirit is identified as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Gal 5:22-23)

It is the Holy Spirit who ensures the universality and unity of the Church…. The unity life, the unity of Pentecost, according to the Spirit, is achieved when one makes the effort to put God, not oneself, at the centre.

Let’s strive to put God at the centre of our lives to ensure we lead fulfilled and fruitful lives for Christ.

While not the first guide to monastic life, it became the foundation for most monasteries across Western Europe. More than 700 young Christians gathered at the Ankawa Youth Meeting in Iraq, where Pope Leo XIV delivered a message of faith, hope and resilience. Many of the participants experienced displacement when ISIS seized the Nineveh Plains in 2014, yet they continue to witness courageously to their faith and build a future rooted in peace.

The Pope encouraged them to be “Christ’s light” in a region that continues to face instability, reminding them that prayer, faith and charity are powerful forces for transformation and unity.
