The strange thing is that this lesson has to be learned generation after generation, by political leaders and military commanders—Afghanistan, Vietnam, all the way back to Athens, as @yarotrof notes.

In 2023, Indonesia were stripped of the under-20 World Cup for refusing to allow the Israeli team entry.
Fifa's justification then was the vague "due to the current circumstances".
Quite a contrast to the hardline "FIFA is not involved in host immigration processes" now.
@prakash_MH12KA1@CMofKarnataka Theoretically yes. In practice, utilities are state-government entities whose chain of command goes to the concerned ministry, not the corporation, not even the GBA. Given our bureaucratic setup, this matters a lot. Someone needs to bang heads together.
These are the kind of problems @CMofKarnataka must pay attention to. Because it was difficult to get two government departments to cooperate, this place will cause traffic problems and hazards for years.
Getting govt depts to cooperate needs strong political leadership.

A light pole already obstructed the road, so the solution was to cement the road and install a divider around it, making the passage even narrower for vehicles. Only in Bengaluru can a road improvement make a road less usable.

Wrong-side driving is on the rise; what it says about the future of India
'Most of our problems come from the same force that condones wrong side driving. The fire that broke out in a Delhi hotel a few days ago, killing 21, was caused by the same mindset that empowers people to take a 10-tonne vehicle out on the street, drive on the wrong side the whole day, and face no consequences, unless someone takes a video, posts it on social media and tags the police. Any officer in this country can just step out of his office, on to the road, and see wrong-side driving within five minutes, but they appear to notice it only on social media.'

I am fed up of seeing this region from a Western lens. That’s why we are offering this course.
We often encounter the narrative that West Asia is an unfathomable quagmire of ancient, convoluted religious conflicts. In reality, the region’s dynamics follow a readable and distinct logic - one that is driven by modern state rivalries, strategic maritime chokepoints, and significant economic leverage in major international forums.
For professionals across academia, defence, and the corporate sector, understanding this crucial region is no longer optional.
Our upcoming West Asia: Crossroads in Conflict course is designed to move past the sensationalised headlines, to offer you the structural literacy required to comprehend these complexities. Join us to learn from some of the world's leading experts in this 5-week course.
Applications close 24 June. Early bird scholarship ends in 2 days.

I write for The Pioneer: “What India–Nepal Debate Often Misses.”
Civilisational ties and territorial sovereignty are not contradictory but complementary. Boundary demarcation and national interests matter. Equally important is the trust that enables neighbours to resolve difficult questions through dialogue rather than confrontation.

Adm Menon is right: many analysts feel that they must use military jargon to sound competent & cool.
But this often comes at the cost of clear & free thinking.
Adm Raja Menon gently excoriates keyboard warriors who wage a “jargon war” on the layperson. “India in particular” he warns, “should be wary of using jargon as substitute for rigorous thinking.” https://t.co/qMQTCRx3cC
You poor innocent man: If he did that, how would anyone know about his heroic labours? Do you think leaders fly around the world with their enormous entourages because they need to get some quiet work done?
Impressions from CJP protest:
*It’s certainly a crowd - the entire Jantar Mantar protest area is full
* Crowd is a mixed bag - lots of regular folks, lots of young people, old couples, lots of youtubers. The vibe among people is finally we’re getting to say something. We want accountability. We want someone to listen to us
* It’s not very well organised - possibly because they didn’t really know what to expect. Mic, stage and everything came up after Dipke came.
* Sonam Wangchuck now is holding the crowd with a speech
* Delhi Police doing a great job of managing crowd. Bunch of rw types were trying to create a ruckus. They just made sure they were shunted out of the main space
