Sounds like more backdoor deals and corruption in San Francisco

Something doesn't add up.

On 7/22/2026, one day before the Department of Elections certified the Great Highway Compromise petition signatures, D7 Supervisor Myrna Melgar submitted a request to change the ballot language so that a "Yes" vote would be framed as eliminating a park.

On that day, the measure hadn't even been certified for the November ballot.

On 7/23/2026, the petition signatures were certified.

Then, on the morning of 7/24/2026, less than 24 hours after certification of the petition, the Ballot Simplification Committee held a public meeting. There was little time for the public to learn about the meeting.

Joel Engardio, Lucas Lux, and their friends were there. They spoke at the podium and basically said that they oppose any changes and that the sharing option would kill their park.

They absolutely refused any form of sharing, any compromise, and any change.

Let me say this again. Lucas Lux told the judge that the skatepark and everything on the asphalt road are temporary installations. According to Rec and Park's recent press release, the expedited playground construction is also temporary.

Almost 16,000 San Francisco voters know what they signed.

Under the Great Highway Compromise proposal, the roadway would be shared by everyone Monday through Friday, including private vehicles, while the existing bike lanes, promenade, and pathways remain open. The space would then be closed to private vehicles on weekends and holidays for restricted use.

Was this public meeting noticed with sufficient advance notice to allow the public and residents with language access needs to participate?

Under San Francisco Administrative Code Chapter 91 (Language Access), city boards, commissions, advisory bodies, and departments must provide language access services at a public meeting or hearing if a member of the public requests them at least 48 hours before the meeting.

This public meeting took place less than 24 hours after the certification.

Why was there such a rush? How did Myrna Melgar's request come before the measure was officially certified? And why wasn't the public given more notice before a meeting affecting a citizen led initiative supported by almost 16,000 San Francisco voters?

The impacted districts include many monolingual seniors, families, and residents. Are we going to assume they have no right to know about or participate in this important discussion?

These are fair questions that deserve clear answers.

Public trust depends on transparency and an open process, not one that appears rushed or inaccessible.

What I witnessed today was an attempt to silence the voices of ordinary people by those who believe we don't deserve to be informed or have a voice.

So why are Joel Engardio and Lucas Lux doing this?

Lucas Lux's key goal is not "winning" the lawsuit but creating delay, uncertainty, and administrative burden before the signature deadline.

One week. 11,000 signatures. July 6.

The ordinary people will continue to move mountains, one signature at a time. We won't be distracted.
