Africa’s health security begins with a strong, skilled and supported health workforce.
Across our continent, community health workers are on the frontlines of healthcare, reaching underserved communities, preventing disease, detecting health threats early and connecting families to essential services. Investing in them is a political, public health and economic priority.
From 28–30 October 2026, Abuja, Nigeria, will host the High-Level Forum on a Fit-for-Purpose Health Workforce, advancing Africa’s ambition to reach 2 million community health workers by 2030.
Hosted by H.E. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, African Union Champion for Human Resources for Health and the Community Health Delivery Partnership, the Forum will bring together African leadership, including Africa CDC Director General Dr Jean Kaseya, Nigeria’s Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, and UNICEF Deputy Executive Director Dr Omar Abdi, alongside governments and partners.
The ambition is clear: translate political commitments into sustained financing, stronger health systems and a community health workforce equipped to deliver for Africa’s people.
For Africa CDC, investing in community health workers is central to stronger primary healthcare, health security and Africa’s health sovereignty.
Africa’s health workforce is Africa’s future. The time to invest is now.

A new continental network launched by Africa CDC will strengthen vaccine safety monitoring and generate evidence specific to African populations.
Developed in collaboration with the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (@CEPIvaccines), the African Vaccine Safety Sentinel Surveillance Network (AVASSN) will establish background rates for health emergencies, helping experts assess potential vaccine safety signals and make informed public health decisions.
From 28 September to 2 October 2026, vaccine safety experts from 10 African countries gathered in Lusaka, Zambia, for a five-day training-of-trainers to build the technical capacity to needed generate robust, context-specific safety data.
The initiative will strengthen vaccine safety surveillance and ensure African populations are better represented in global vaccine research, development and decision-making.
Africa-led evidence. Stronger vaccine safety monitoring. Greater confidence in immunisation.

Kenya is leading the way in #LocalManufacturing, setting a powerful example for Africa’s journey toward health self-reliance. At #UNGA81, visionary leaders came together to chart a bold roadmap for the continent’s future.
Hon. @HonAdenDuale, Cabinet Secretary for Health, #Kenya, emphasised: “African manufacturers face a very profound market failure, and that is why we must correct the market failure.”
@Dr_JeanKaseya, Director General of Africa CDC, announced a historic milestone: for the first time, Africa will drive the entire process, from clinical trials to regulation, manufacturing, and market access, right here on the continent.
As Kenya faces the challenge of Ebola, Africa CDC stands in solidarity with the Kenyan people and government, confident in their resilience and leadership.

Stronger preparedness requires more than responding to crises. It requires African countries to have the systems, capacity and resources to act early.
As our Director-General, @Dr_JeanKaseya, highlights, sustained and predictable investment in African-led solutions is essential to anticipate threats, respond faster and protect our communities.

“Preparedness cannot begin when a crisis arrives.”
@AfricaCDC Director-General @Dr_JeanKaseya makes the case for sustained, predictable investment in African-led systems and solutions, shaped by countries’ own realities, that can anticipate threats, respond faster, and protect communities.
The @Pandemic_Fund is proud to support countries across #Africa in building stronger, more sustainable preparedness.

178,600 mothers. 1.18 million newborns die Every year, in Africa alone.
Most of these deaths are preventable. Africa has shown what is possible: maternal mortality across AU Member States fell 42% between 2000 and 2023. But at the current pace, we will reach 2030 at nearly five times the SDG target.
The gap is not in policy. It is in financing and implementation, and that is where parliaments come in.
Africa CDC's new continental report on causes and drivers of maternal and child mortality (August 2026) found that only 28 of 55 Member States reported a dedicated sexual and reproductive health budget line. Of 34 countries whose death reviews were examined, only 14 documented progress on earlier recommendations.
On October 8, on the margins of the 153rd IPU Assembly in Arusha, the Office of the AU Champion for Maternal and Child Health and Africa CDC will convene African parliamentarians for a high-level dinner dialogue:
From Commitment to Results: African Parliamentary Action for the Three Zeros on RMNCAH towards 2030.
The Three Zeros, championed by H.E. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, President of the United Republic of Tanzania and AU Champion for Maternal and Child Health:
→ Zero Home Delivery
→ Zero Preventable Maternal and Newborn Deaths
→ Zero Unvaccinated Children
Parliamentarians approve the budgets, ask the questions and hold governments to account. The aim is to leave Arusha with an agreed Africa Parliamentary Action Note, named focal points in each delegation and a date to review progress.
Commitments only matter when they are financed, implemented and tracked.

The crusade for African Union member states to have quality laboratory systems that produce accurate, reliable, and timely results to guide clinical decisions during health emergencies is ongoing in Africa.
Over 60 experts and multi-sectorial stakeholders from across government agencies, international partners and civil society involved in strengthening laboratory systems met in Monrovia from 07 – 11 September 2026.
Under the guidance of Africa CDC through its Centre for Laboratory Diagnostics and Systems Liberia reviewed and revised the Liberia National Laboratory Strategic Plan which runs from 2026 – 2030.
The country assessed its progress, identified gaps, and has now charted a realistic, well-costed Plan for 2026–2031.
The new strategy, given the consultative approach used in its development, has established a comprehensive roadmap for strengthening laboratory governance, policy implementation, coordination and regulatory oversight across different sectors.
