[Greg Berge @GregBerge]

One of the most underappreciated parts of coaching is the community you build with the coaches you compete against.

People on the outside see the rivalry.

They see two coaches and teams trying to beat each other. They see the intensity, the big games, and the bragging rights.

What they don’t always see are the relationships built behind it.

Some of my greatest friends in coaching were also guys I desperately wanted to beat during the season.

But when the game was over, there was respect.

And in the offseason, those relationships grew.

We shared ideas. We talked about our teams, our programs, our families, and the highs and lows of the profession.

Because very few people truly understand coaching unless they’ve done it.

Another coach understands the pressure, the difficult decisions, the sleepless nights, and how much you care about getting it right.

They also understand why you do it.

To impact young people.

To bring out the best in them.

To build a team.

To teach lessons that hopefully last long after the final game.

Over my 30+ years in coaching, I competed against some incredible coaches and even better people.

We wanted to beat each other when the ball went up.

But we also shared a profession we loved and a purpose much bigger than the scoreboard.

When I look back on my coaching career, the wins and championships will always matter.

But so will the people I met along the way.

And many of them were standing on the other sideline.
