I’d expand what @spann calls an “ocean of ignorance” to cover most social media. It’s easy to freak out and shout “conspiracy!” when you don’t know how anything works.
Over the past 72 hours I have received countless messages from people asking "Where is the moon? It has disappeared!"
This seems to come from another idiotic TikTok video. Seems like many folks don't know about lunar phases, which happen because the Moon orbits Earth and Earth orbits the Sun.
A reminder... I would not use "TikTok" as your source of science or weather information... it can be an ocean of ignorance.
Thousands of residents were still without power when @mosbren and his team distributed the @WataugaDemocrat on Wednesday; it was the first news some had received since the storm. @laur_watso for @CJR's Getting the Story, on the work of local reporters https://t.co/DeZfXYY9WH
AI-generated books are not books. They’re giant pamphlets of nonsense. They’ll be literally worthless. I’m fighting back by actually writing real books. Support real people, not coded programs churning out brain-rot. There’s enough of that existing already.
Publishing is 100% going try to force AI books on us & the only way we’ll escape it is if we devalue them en masse as the “consumers” they deem us to be. That means rejecting them outright, or if tricked, engaging in honest reviewing (none of this “be nice” bs) to inform others.
If you claim there’s no govt help for folks after Hurricane Helene, you’re flat out lying. Case in point, this article, which also proves why local news needs more investment. Great work by @kyle_perrotti. Misinformation hurts real recovery/assistance efforts.
BREAKING: FEMA Administrator @FEMA_Deanne and @NC_Governor, along with local officials in Haywood County, decried disinformation regarding the response to #Helene. Especially strong words from Republican Sheriff Bill Wilke.

DON'T FALL FOR IT: The GCPD and Garden City Area Chamber of Commerce have been alerted by individuals who believed they were purchasing vintage cars from a local business called "Murphy's Motors", only to discover that this business does not exist in Garden City. 🧵
@WxLiz It’s off topic somewhat, but this thread reminded me of a conversation @TornadoTornado had at his lecture recently about the need for social scientists on survey teams.
@WxLiz Something I want to do in the future is be the member of a damage survey team that listens to & interviews survivors to get their account. Their story is also important data, in a way.
So, a couple of things: Who in their right mind made this graphic? “Buffalo hunting” is not really a historic thing to glorify just to advertise a ball game.
Also, night games for college sports are silly.
Some pictures of Picher. Such a tragic backstory to this town and for it to be ended by a tornado. Still lots of remnants of the entire history of the town. Surrounded by empty foundations from destroyed homes and debarked trees.
Do the damn thing, come hell or high water. @SmokyMtnNews hasn’t missed a weekly print edition in its 25 years, and I’m happy to say that due to a ton of hard work and some luck, that streak will continue.
If there is one thing #Helene taught us, it is that we NEED **local** media and weather - television especially, but also radio and Internet. They have proven to be lifesavers where social media failed and in a realm national media cannot possibly reach.

With the addition of two EF-0s in #SCwx from Helene, 2024 has joined an elite company of four other years as the only years on record to exceed 1500 tornadoes. Those years:
2004 - 1810 tornadoes
2011 - 1723 tornadoes
2019 - 1547 tornadoes
2019 - 1547 tornadoes
