Patients in WA spent 5,333 hours ramped outside hospitals — the worst May on record — as flu cases surged and emergency departments struggled to cope.
This is more than just a number. It's a sign of a health system under immense strain.

[AMA President @amapresident]

It is crucial that we avoid a scenario where profits are put before patients, like we have seen happen in the US with disastrous results. Clinical decisions must remain in the hands of doctors and their patients — not influenced by insurers or corporate ownership.

[AMA Media @ama_media]

The AMA is concerned about the aggressive push into vertically integrated healthcare by Bupa and other private health insurers — a move that risks transforming our system into a US-style model where profits come before patients. #auspol

This week is National Road Safety Week. Doctors, paramedics, nurses and many other health workers are faced with the grim consequences of road trauma every single day. The AMA is committed to advocating for improvements in road safety.

People need to start booking appointments now with their GPs, who are trained to ensure that people, including vulnerable cohorts, such as the elderly and children, receive their vaccinations in a safe and timely manner.

[AMA Media @ama_media]

We can't afford to be complacent with this year's #flu season. It is now April, which means it's time to start booking appointments with your GP to get a flu shot.

But while this investment will help address affordability issues for many who don’t currently qualify for bulk billing incentives, structural reform of Medicare rebates is needed to ensure today’s patients get the care they need.

The $8.5bn investment followed years of campaigning through our Modernise Medicare campaign, which highlighted the long-term neglect of Medicare and consequences of that neglect on our health system. #auspol https://t.co/cu7wTcV3bX

A tax on sugary drinks is an obvious measure to help curb the nation's escalating obesity crisis. Without a sugar tax, obesity and other chronic diseases such as Type 2 diabetes will continue to cost the health system billions of dollars each year. #auspol

The AMA welcomes the government’s commitment to increase transparency on consumer out-of-pocket costs for private healthcare by announcing a planned upgrade to the Medical Costs Finder website.

This must change. No one should have to fear undertaking genetic testing due to concerns over life insurance discrimination. Read our media release: https://t.co/CzIQ1Lvuw4

[AMA President @amapresident]

It is hard to believe we are in a situation where people, acting through fear of financial penalty, might forsake genetic testing that could save their life or the lives of their children or other relatives.

[AMA President @amapresident]

We need to fund more nurses and allied health professionals to work alongside GPs to deliver the long-term treatment, care and patient education services that are crucial for better health outcomes. #ModerniseMedicare

GPs are managing more health problems in each consultation and spending more time with patients as the incidence of chronic disease continues to rise. https://t.co/ZHwXcvoRRz #ModerniseMedicare

The need for a new fit-for-purpose agreement has never been greater — for both doctors and their patients. #auspol

[AMA President @amapresident]

We are glad to see some good news in this report card, however, there is no escaping the reality that Australia’s public hospitals remain critically logjammed. Hospital performance remains markedly worse than it was just five years ago. https://t.co/mP7ImKb1Lt #auspol @AMA_NSW

While recent investment from the federal government and action to address issues in some states and territories is welcome; the delay to a new National Health Reform Agreement is disappointing. #auspol

[AMA President @amapresident]

We need a rethink of Medicare rebates to ensure today’s patients who have increasingly complex needs get the care they require. https://t.co/PzbWQmzspL

These announcements show both sides of politics understand the funding that's needed to reverse decades of underinvestment and improve the sustainability and affordability of general practice. #auspol

[AMA Media @ama_media]

Both major parties have committed to a $8.5B Medicare funding boost, which has been welcomed. But we need to also reform Medicare to provide the right structure and funding to deliver longer consults and better management of chronic disease for our modern society.

[AMA President @amapresident]

Our #ModerniseMedicare campaign has highlighted the neglect of #Medicare. While the announcements last weekend were warmly welcomed, our campaign focuses on the need for Medicare reform to ensure patients with complex and chronic care needs are better supported.
