For many years (decades), I have offered conscientious storm observing (in the field) as a marvelous form of experiential learning. “The best geologists go out and study the rocks. The best meteorologists go out and study the sky.” Plenty have heard me say this.
So I was not surprised to see these citations on experiential learning in Robin Tanamachi’s talk regarding student surveys of her university storm-chasing course.
There’s science behind this. Use your storm chasing as a learning opportunity. Every storm and storm situation is unique, and has something to teach.

In 109 supercells, tornadic storms tended to have stronger, more organized rear-flank winds directed toward the low-level mesocyclone. Buoyancy differences were small, suggesting that outflow organization mattered more than whether it was warmer or colder. #AMSMadisonSummit
