On #MadarakaDay, we honor the unity and self-determination that shaped Kenya’s destiny. 🇰🇪
At @ayt_org, we empower young Africans to lead, innovate and own their future. True freedom means every young person has a voice and a seat at the table.
Let’s drive change. With courage.
Earlier today, we convened the Nairobi County GBV TWG with all sectors at the table. We analyzed rising femicides, reviewed referral pathways which are showing improvement, and reported progress on cases logged via the 21094 SMS platform. Let's keep pathways open.

Yesterday in Mukuru, we held a community baraza on SGBV as part of our Access to Justice & Security Project. We introduced our SMS helpline (21094) for safe reporting. Residents engaged security officials directly. We remain commited in strengthening justice pathways.
This Mother’s Day,we celebrate the mothers, who shape the lives of Africa’s young people every single day. You are the reason our youth show up with hope, resilience, and the courage to dream.
Happy Mother’s Day to the women who build Africa’s future from the ground up.

“Youth are not just beneficiaries of governance—they are key partners in shaping Africa’s democratic future.”
It’s time to co-lead, not just consult.

@ayt_org ED @WinifredOkumu is in Accra at a high-level convening on democracy and human rights in Africa. She emphasizes that data is essential for driving youth-led change, stating, "Youth are key partners in shaping Africa's democratic future." #D4GA
Excluding young people from transitional governments risks their legitimacy and durability. The call is for #AFSIT to shift from mere participation to co-creation—institutionalizing youth inclusion, strengthening youth-led CSOs, and measuring influence, not just presence.
Africa has the youngest population, yet young people remain excluded from political transition tables. Not because they aren't active—but because their influence is unrecognized.
Today, @ayt_org Head of Programs @IrmaMaringo spoke at the @AU_ECOSOCC#AFSIT Forum:
Ms. @IrmaMaringo, Head of Programs at @ayt_org, puts the spotlight where it belongs.
#Africa is the youngest continent, yet young people remain underrepresented in political transitions. The issue is no longer participation, but influence.
She says that #youth are already active as mobilizers, governance participants, peacebuilders, and accountability actors. But these roles are not fully recognized or built into formal transition systems.

Ms. @IrmaMaringo, Head of Programs at @ayt_org, draws a sharp line between engagement and power.
Across countries in 🌍, young people are trained, consulted, and mobilized, but rarely placed at decision-making tables in transitional governments, councils, or mediation platforms.
That gap carries risk. Transitions lose legitimacy and durability when #youth are excluded. She says that the #AFSIT must succeed in its goal to move from participation to co-creation, to institutionalize #youth inclusion, strengthen youth-led CSOs, and measure influence, not just presence.

Dr. @jmartyns (Director of @UNDP’s Regional Programme for Africa) shifts the focus to what sits beneath political instability.
Every year, Africa produces around 10 million graduates, but only about 2 million #jobs are created.
That gap feeds frustration, exclusion, and vulnerability, especially among #youth. Dr. Okeke says that these are not problems that can be handled through short-term projects. They require structural change. That is why #AFSIT was designed as a joint effort between @UNDP and the @_AfricanUnion, combining #development support with political authority to respond to transitions in a more coordinated and effective way.

Why #AFSIT? Why did we even think about AFSIT in the first place? And what does this mean for you and I?!
Dr. @jmartyns, Director of @UNDP’s Regional Programme for Africa, lays out the hard reality behind the Africa Facility to Support Inclusive Transitions (AFSIT).
He points out that across the continent 🌍, progress and instability are unfolding at the same time. Over the past six years, #Africa has held around 1️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ elections but also experienced 1️⃣0️⃣ military coups.
That ratio signals a pattern.
Add rising insecurity in places like the #Sahel and the scale of the challenge becomes clear. Transitions are not isolated events, they are shaped by deeper structural pressures that cannot be ignored.

Dr. @jmartyns outlines 3️⃣outcomes #AFSIT is built around:
1️⃣Systems change: focusing on how governance actually functions, from public #finance to women’s political participation, as a way to prevent crises before they emerge.
2️⃣Capacity building: ensuring #civilsociety has the tools and platforms to lead inclusive transitions, not just observe them.
3️⃣ Regional cooperation: creating space for shared learning across countries so experiences in one context inform another.
He says that AFSIT will only work if civil society is equipped, connected, and actively driving these processes.

Mr. Kyeretwie Osei, Head of Programs at ECOSOCC, presents on how ECOSOCC is promoting good governance across the continent, and expands on ECOSOCC's role in the #AFSIT.
He explains that ECOSOCC was created to promote a culture of good governance (which is grounded in a functioning social contract between citizens and the state).
He explains ECOSOCC’s role as a bridge. On one side, translating AU frameworks into something citizens can access, question, and engage. On the other, capturing what people are actually experiencing and feeding that back into AU decision-making as structured input. This feedback loop matters. Without it, #governance stays disconnected. With it, policies begin to reflect real conditions across communities and @_AfricanUnion member states.
