@shashj The whole basis of the defence of killing persons under custody in Afghanistan - that somehow it was acceptable and somehow it worked - is flawed.
@hardmanr@MarkNicolDM How about acted according to the rules of engagement and laws of war and not shot prisoners with their hands bound, on the basis of flawed intelligence reports? That would be a start.
@Charlie533080@MarkNicolDM because they thought it was a. Justifiable and b. Legal and c. Efficient - on the basis of kill lists built on flawed intelligence. There were many reasons Helmand turned into a fiasco. Kill lists was one of them.
@Charlie533080@MarkNicolDM Whats interesting about the DM’s serialisation of Mark Nicol’s book is that it makes no attempt to deny extra-judicial killings occurred, but instead confirms them in some detail.
@Charlie533080@MarkNicolDM It is surprising to see how many British former officers, trained repeatedly in the rules of engagement and the laws of war, now defend the actions of a group of soldiers who repeatedly killed Afghan detainees…

@Charlie533080@MarkNicolDM Killing persons under custody PUC) is wrong and a violation of RoE. As much as that, killing detainees also doesn’t work in suppressing an insurgency, on operations supposedly codified by NATO RoE in support of ‘democracy’, as it antagonises the local population.
@Charlie533080 The phrase ‘fashionable to denigrate’ is wrong. Not debatable - just erroneous. Check out the analytic stats on the media reports - overwhelmingly defensive of the military . Worth remembering too that the allegations originated in the UKSF community, not the media.
@Charlie533080 Charlie, that phrase is bankrupt in its every word. What about when rough men act outside the laws of war and in doing so incite more enemies to take up arms? Do you want to apply that phrase to the IDF too?
RFE/RL takes apart a Russian Geran-4 drone to uncover what makes the jet-powered unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) faster, harder to intercept, and capable of operating deep inside Ukraine -- from its turbojet engine and advanced camera to foreign-made communications and navigation components. @cxemu@radiosvoboda
Bullet riddled hand bag and effects belonging to Supreme Court Judge Kadria Yasini who was killed by Taliban assassins in Kabul in 2021 alongside Judge Zakia Herawi. Their killings heralded the erasure of Afghan women from office and public life under the Taliban. Unforgotten.
Sir Adrian Carton de Wiart went over the top today with his troops at the Somme, and alongside a handful of survivors reached the German lines at La Boisselle, which he stormed pulling pins from grenades with his teeth. Victoria Cross. Beau sabreur. Foreign fighter supreme.
Sir Alex Younger: what a man and what a loss. In office and out, he embodied a calm rationale, an incisiveness and literal ‘intelligence’ that was as reassuring as it was laudable. An exceptional figure, widely admired, he will be very much missed.
