I’m a big Nithya supporter and I’m very excited that she made the runoff and I think she absolutely needs to reverse course on 41.18. Good on the merits, and good politics.
Just after Nithya Raman overtook Spencer Pratt, Karen Bass’ campaign issued a statement noting this quote from Raman: “I don’t think a kid’s going to be safer because a tent is 500 feet away from a school, you know, it’s like, whatever.” Expect to see that one a lot until Nov. 3.
@jrstephens310@marielgarzaGS The conspiracy theories are already out there. When almost every democracy in the world can deliver results within 24 hours of the election, it’s not unreasonable for Californians to want the exact same thing.
@jrstephens310@marielgarzaGS No, that’s not the benefit of our system because other states count much faster than us *and* deliver more accurate results.

@jrstephens310@marielgarzaGS What’s the benefit of the current system? Why is it so important to protect the democratic world’s slowest vote count? It’s not turnout - tons of evidence that what we do has no impact on turnout whatsoever. So what are we getting in return?
@jrstephens310@marielgarzaGS Lots of people care including Newsom. That’s why so many are talking about this. There’s no reason it needs to take this long except for dysfunction which we *can fix* and as someone who cares about the quality of public services I think we need to fix this.
Infill housing requires around a third less in up-front infrastructure costs, and generate more property taxes than comparable greenfield development. As cities wrestle with budget shortfalls, they should allow more of this type of development.
ICYMI: First official California union opposition to wealth tax from @CA_Bldg_Trades
Lots of dissent within labor over SEIU-UHW's proposal. But Trades are first to formally oppose it, warning it'll drive away wealthy builders who generate jobs

Pretty pathetic stuff. Remember, for many Angelenos this is their only option for transportation yet we force them to deal with type of disorder on a daily basis.
@mikehtrujillo Are you trying to make the argument that because Nithya is a woman she's not smart enough to decide things for herself? That's what this sounds like.
Cool dude. Meanwhile, in the real world, Nithya Raman is the only one on Council trying to fix ULA and YIMBYs are aggressively pushing for a fix in Sacramento.
What have you done?
https://t.co/YoKNW2De6F
@impostersyndrum@AaronGuhreen Everyone who works in real estate or understands economics. Unfortunately, YIMBYs w/o real experience and politicians like Nithya Raman as well as UCLA “housing experts” like Shane Phillips don’t fall into those two categories and we’re all for it.
RAND just dropped the most comprehensive study yet of Measure ULA.
High-value transactions 31%🔽. Apartment production 30%🔽. Buildings that sold passed the tax through to tenants as higher rents. ~$452M in lost revenue to city, county & schools. ~16,000 construction jobs lost.
@DigitalSamIAm@ssg10 There's no amount of tax planning that can allow someone making $400K of W2 income per year in CA to pay only $80K - $100K per year in taxes.
It's even crueler than described. Say you marry your college sweetheart on a student visa, or girlfriend on a work visa. Maybe pregnant? Doesn't matter. You're forced to live apart or abroad for two years. If she is from 75 countries on Trump's arbitrary ban list, indefinitely.
The biggest bullshit move by DHS in its history. So everyone on a O1 or H1B visa would have to stop working legally in the US, go back to their country and wait for years of backlog? This includes top scientists in our universities, founders of billion dollar companies (at least 3 just in our portfolio would be affected by the way). And if we look at individual countries it becomes even more bs. Indians would have to wait decades. Russians don’t have anywhere to go (there is no US embassy in Russia, hello?).
This is the worst imaginable way to disrupt important work for the country and pretend you’re fighting some loophole.
@jdcmedlock Genuinely curious - what’s your solution for companies relocating jobs from the US to low tax Ireland? It’s basically a tax haven for corporate income tax. What can we do?
First the unions propping up Pratt.
Now the Police boosting Huang.
I don't know if this f*ckery is effective, but it certainly speaks to the level of cynicism among powerful interests aligned with Bass who benefit from the status quo.
