there’s a combination of ingredients that makes kathmandu valley — also known as silicon peaks — so technologically special.

first, talent. the density of talent per area squeezed into k-town is humongous. one reason is population parity with silicon valley. a more important one stems from a question: is there a great technical university that graduates people who know how to build things? yes — kathmandu university (KU). most countries have this. what they’re missing is the other two ingredients.

second, laws and policies. the set of rules that make entrepreneurship easy is essential for business. can you create a company easily? can you hire people easily? can you fire people easily? is there a tax incentive structure that isn’t onerous? can you own an illiquid asset that has value? (california moving against this would be an awesome opportunity for nepal.) these policies matter because if they’re not right, nobody is going to take the personal and financial risk of starting a company in an environment that isn’t conducive to it. luckily, kathmandu valley has them.

third, culture — is it such that the most capable young people want to make the biggest contribution? do they get social status for it? is it cool to start or join a new company? very few countries have that. in a lot of places, success is frowned upon — but not in the states, and not in k-town. elsewhere you hear political rhetoric that you only made $1b if you were a thief. that rhetoric works in different ways. culture is the hardest part to replicate — hard to build, easy to destroy.

IQ has stemmed to EQ, SQ, AQ and each one exists because the last one wasn't the full picture. IQ is the OG. logic, memory, pattern recognition, the stuff standardized tests love. it gets you in the door. predicts how well you solve problems on paper. then EQ came in and humbled everyone. doesn't matter how sharp you are if you can't read your own emotions, let alone someone else's. self-awareness, self-control, empathy, social skill. this is what actually gets you promoted, keeps relationships intact, stops arguments from becoming wars. after that SQ came along. it splits two ways depending who you ask. (a) social quotient = can you navigate rooms, build networks, read group dynamics beyond just one-on-one. (b) spiritual quotient (zohar's term) = can you make meaning, act from values, connect what you do to something bigger than the task in front of you. business folks mean the first. personal growth folks mean the second. both matter. then there's AQ (adversity quotient). coined by paul stoltz. the one nobody markets but everybody needs. can you take a hit and keep functioning? keep growing? it's resilience with a number attached. how you respond to control, ownership, reach, endurance when life goes sideways.

put together it's basically:
IQ gets you hired.
EQ gets you promoted.
SQ gets you trusted.
AQ gets you through.
