DC is going through unprecedented, challenging times
The critics: DC sucks! It’s just soulless federal bureaucrats, in a swamp
Us: But we still have porches. And music. Dammit.
Eight months before the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, DC marked its own emancipation.
Today, we celebrate our history, culture, and community as we honor 164 years of DC Emancipation Day.
And we reaffirm that our freedom is incomplete until DC becomes the 51st state.

“They had that night where they brought out all these kids that all said they started playing hockey all because of him,” Connor McMichael said. “So I think, when you look back at his career, like what he did on the ice is super important, but I think, off the ice, he really helped the community grow and introduced the game of hockey to so many kids.”
On how since Alex Ovechkin's rookie season, participation in USA Hockey’s Potomac Valley region (D.C., Maryland and Virginia) has seen an increase of 28% among boys and 184% among girls.

If this is the final ride for Alex Ovechkin, what a ride it’s been. A lifetime in a Washington Capitals sweater, rewriting the record books, turning DC into a hockey city built on belief.
Forever grateful for every goal, every roar, every memory.
One last time for the Captain.
One more chance to thank Ovi 🙌
These eight hockey fans got to meet with @Capitals legend Alex Ovechkin to give thanks for the impact he's had on their lives.
