While many holiday traditions centre on home & hope, too many Nova Scotians are housing insecure. They don’t have the stability to find this sense of peace & joy.
Over the holidays we’re sharing words from a tenant who knows what it means to have a home. #housingisahumanright
Coercive control does not happen all at once. It happens quietly. Through monitoring, isolation, financial restriction, and fear.
Over time, a person’s world becomes smaller until they feel trapped inside an invisible box.
This is why coercive control is so difficult to identify and even harder to prove. Survivors may struggle to name it. Friends, family, and systems often miss it.
Canada is beginning to acknowledge this reality. Recent Criminal Code reforms recognize that abuse is often a pattern, not a single incident.
This video does an extraordinary job of showing what words and legal definitions often fail to capture.
Countering the narrative that even in brutal weather, there is space inside for everyone. We know women stay in unsafe situations when shelters are full.
And a reminder that housing is the solution to homelessness. @globalhalifax https://t.co/NVryVVDcNo
"'Nowhere else to go,' says woman at encampment decried as eyesore amid Winnipeg's crackdown."
I hope I've raised my kids to never want to refer to a human being as an eyesore.

For many, navigating GBV is an isolating experience, BUT no one should feel alone. As a community, we must support women and children as they flee Gender-Based Violence and secure a safer place to live.
This is a collaborative post developed for #16daysofactivism@ShelterMovers
When women and families flee Gender-Based Violence, the experience can be daunting. For many, lack of affordability, limited finances, and uncertainty around the supports available act as barriers to accessing safe housing.
With the support of organizations like Adsum for Women & Children and Shelter Movers, we can work together to provide individuals with trauma-informed support aimed at reducing barriers associated with accessing secure and safe housing.
Nobody wants encampments.
The difference is that I advocate for solutions that respect that people are rights-holders we have abandoned, not criminals.
You advocate not for real resources, but for the disappearance of people without addressing why they even become homeless.
@FX1019 wow! Coats for Kids brought in mountains of donations. Huge thanks to sponsors and the community for generous support, helping to keep kids warm this winter.
We can’t do this without you

@adsumforwomen and Children’s executive director Sheri Lecker told the committee that Nova Scotia’s rental market lacks an adequate inventory of truly affordable units.

No single approach will solve the housing crisis, but Adsum wants to see much more emphasis placed on building, maintaining and renovating #housing that is considered truly affordable. #AffordableHousing
