Statement by the Humanitarian Coordinator for Yemen, Laurent Bukera, on Humanitarian Situation in Ta’iz
Aden, 20 October 2026 - I am deeply concerned by the rapidly deteriorating humanitarian and economic situation in Ta’iz.
Road closures and insecurity are preventing vital supplies, including fuel, from entering the city and surrounding areas, threatening the lives of millions who are now unable to access critical services and commodities. The health system is close to collapse. Shortages threaten hospital energy supply and medical oxygen availability, putting hundreds of patients’ lives at risk. The price of whatever food and fuel is left, has more than doubled, adding significant pressure on families already struggling to cope. Of particular concern is access to water for hundreds of thousands of families, with the production in the city halved and alternatives running out.
The United Nations and partners continue to do everything possible to support people in need in Taiz and help bring essential goods, services and medical supplies into the city.
I call on the Houthi de facto authorities to urgently open safe passage for commercial goods, food, medicine, and all humanitarian assistance to reach Taiz city and those most in need without obstruction.
Safe and unhindered humanitarian access is essential to maintaining critical services and reaching communities before hunger, preventable diseases, and injuries claim more lives.
I reiterate that civilians and civilian infrastructure must be protected at all times, and international humanitarian law must be respected.

The Houthis in Yemen have tightened their siege of the city of Taiz, driving up food prices by 50 per cent and causing alarming fuel shortages.
Cholera is also spreading quickly around the country amid a renewed displacement crisis.

One message from my family in Sana’a summarizing the agony people are going through. A pray for a beautiful life before they die. Cancer patient. People waiting for death. It pains me to my bones what’s happening to Yemen. 💔
Required reading from @Afrahnasser in @DAWN_Journal on Saudi Arabia's new strategy in Yemen, recent developments in the country, and what needs to be done to prevent a wider war.
Incredible analysis from one of the best on Yemen. More below:
The only way to avert a larger war in Yemen amid major Houthi gains in recent days is by empowering the Internationally Recognized Government, lowering the power asymmetry between it and the Houthis, says @Afrahnasser.

📄 Mediation in #Yemen fundamentally depends on the political will of local and regional parties. But to have a chance to improve the situation, the #UN must first set up its mediators for success.

📄 Afrah Nasser argues that UN mediation in Yemen has shifted from supporting political transition to reactive crisis management, leaving current mediation initiatives disconnected from the country’s political realities. She argues that a fundamental overhaul of the UN approach is urgently needed.

"As the regional conflict between the United States, Israel and Iran continues with no end in sight, unaddressed questions in Yemen are naturally and unfortunately spilling over as a result," writes @Afrahnasser.

As Yemen faces a potential return to full-scale war, actors in the country and abroad aim to use the country as a bargaining chip. Any such return to war would be a disaster but appears likely, writes @Afrahnasser.

Solid piece from @Afrahnasser in @DAWN_Journal that highlights what is happening in and around #Yemen. As she argues, a return to full-scale war appears likely, with disastrous results for Yemenis.
The regional war cannot be allowed to further ravage Yemen. More below:

"As Yemen passes 15 years of devastating conflict, the country sits at the edge of another potential escalation amid the widening regional confrontation involving Iran, Israel and the United States," writes @Afrahnasser.
