It's a very good point. Are any of the roughly 8.5 million people in England currently suffering under a hosepipe ban getting a discount on their water bills for a reduced service?
IT'S THE WATER INDUSTRY. Of course not.
Elon Musk has had a lot to say about the grooming gangs scandal. We looked at 24 hours on Musk's X timeline and found a range of false and misleading information being amplified. Produced by Catherine Karelli, Shayan Sardarizadeh and Jake Horton. Graphics by Jacqueline Galvin.
Tomorrow, Thames Water are asking High Court to agree its £3 billion loan. 6 million households will be hit by a £250 hike in their bills. To stop this rip off privatisation government should bring water back into public ownership. Join the court demo at 10.30 @We_OwnIt
If you want to see Michelle Mone kicked out of the House of Lords and arrested until she pays the £232,000,000 she owes give this a RT.
If you want Rishi Sunak's involvement in the £14,900,000,000 PPE Fraud he covered up investigated, LIKE.
It looks very likely that once @thameswater collapses, @SouthernWater will be next.
What is the common denominator between these two companies? @Macquarie.
The Australian investment group is known as the Vampire Kangaroo which, according to The Guardian is a term that 'draws on the company’s Australian origins along with allegations of aggressive asset stripping.'
Macquarie owned Thames Water between 2006 - 17, taking an estimated £2.7bn in dividends during that period and leaving them with £10.8bn of debt, a £7.4bn increase from when they took over.
You'd think that would disqualify the group from ever owning a similar utility in the UK, yet in 2021 they were allowed to purchase Southern Water which, in the subsequent three years, has also grown to have £5.2bn of debt, projected to increase to £8bn by 2030.
Whilst this obviously highlights the ridiculous flaws of private ownership, serious questions should be asked of @Ofwat, @EnvAgency, @DefraGovUK and any other organisation who played any part in the hugely negligent decision to let Macquarie back in again.
Environment Agency balls-up number 74,367,572
@EnvAgency is demanding the decimation of the River Chess one of the rarest rivers on earth.
There are but 225 chalk streams on the entire planet, the rarest river systems on earth and 85% of them are to be found in southern England.
They are also massively damaged by pollution and over abstraction for public water supply. The EA currently estimate that our chalk streams are over abstracted by about 1.4 billion litres of water per day.
The River Chess was the exception. Just 4 years ago @AffinityWater stopped abstraction to save the river yet in July 2024 the EA ordered that abstraction begin again, putting the river at server risk and without consultation. Apparently AW are complying with the EA's instruction as they "to maintain a good relationship with the Environment Agency".
Welcome to the EA, the very govt agency charged with a legal duty to safeguard, protect and conserve our rivers.
What a shambles.
"Southern Water unveils 'utterly ludicrous' plan to ship water from Norwegian fjords to the UK."
And here's the really obscene part, @Ofwat has already approved nonsense and you're going to be given the privilege of paying for it and no, I'm not kidding, I'm really not.

This time last week we were at 10 Downing Street where Jo Bateman handed in a box full of (your) signatures to demand the government stop letting water companies off the hook with sewage spills.💩🌊 Let’s see what happens next. 👀
"Billpayers in England and Wales tricked into ‘stealth bailout’ of water companies."
You're about to be had, again and the regulator is facilitating it.
Everyone admits it, for 35 years water companies have been provided with all of the funding needed to build a properly function sewage system but they ripped us off, shareholders took the money.
Now they're asking us to pay a second time for a service we've already paid for and din't get.

"Thames Water debt emergency seized on by US hedge funds. Elliott Management to play central role in future of utilities giant after scooping up cut-price loans."
American financial vultures are hovering over the soon to be corpse of @thameswater. They're buying up TW's debt on the cheap in the hope / certainty that govt will have to bail the company out and they can then sell the debt on for more than they paid for it.
And guess who picks up the bill for all of that financial engineering and profiteering, yep you, the customer. See under section 10 of govt's new Water (Special Measures) Bill.

"Devon town vs South West Water: Exmouth suing over sewage on beach."
Why in God's name are local residents and business having to do this? Whatever happen to that "urgent" review of water industry regulation? What a shambles.
