Today we release our State of Ageing 2025 infographics.
These 40 free infographics are arranged in the same themes as our State of Ageing report: financial security, demographic changes and trends of our ageing population, older people's experience in work, ageing and health, the quality of England's homes and older people's contributions to society.
We welcome other organisations, researchers, and individuals using these infographics on social media or in workshops as a collaborative and interactive way of exploring the report rapidly.

Dr @AideenYoung, Head of Research and Analysis at the Centre for Ageing Better, has received the prestigious British Society of Gerontology Outstanding Achievement Award at the #BSG2026 conference.
She follows in the footsteps of some of the leading figures in the multidisciplinary scientific study of ageing since the award’s founding almost 20 years ago.
The annual award is given to an individual who has made a significant and lasting contribution to the gerontological understanding of ageing, or to improving the lives of older people, through academic thinking, policy, practice or education.

Yesterday's update on the Government’s Get Britain Working reforms sets out an ambitious vision for a new Jobs and Careers Service, bringing together employment, skills and careers support, with a stronger focus on helping people into sustainable work and career progression rather than simply any job.
At the Centre for Ageing Better, we welcome this direction of travel. Evidence consistently shows that personalised, targeted employment support is critical to helping people in their 50s and 60s navigate the barriers they can face in the labour market.
But the detail will matter. While the reforms rightly focus on outcomes, older workers are not currently identified as a key group or outcome measure for success. If the new service is to deliver on its ambitions, older workers cannot be an afterthought.
We know what works for older workers: personalised support, trusted local delivery and services designed with people aged 50+ in mind. That's why we're keen to see older workers recognised more clearly in these reforms.

"Our new research found that a sizeable minority of people in their 60s are likely without health, income, pensions or savings that they need. So the result is that they face exclusion from the labour market, so they have to engage with the welfare system, often for the first time." Says our Research and Evaluation Manager, Henry Allingham.
Our ‘A Tale of Two 60s’ research, published last week shines a light on how life has changed for people aged 60-69 over the past two decades and how a large minority are living precariously in their later life.

Today we publish our ‘A Tale of Two 60s’ research which shines a light on how life has changed for people aged 60-69 over the past two decades and how a large minority are living precariously in their later life.
The reports explore the work, finances, planning and saving experiences of people in their 60s, to show how people experience this decade of transition, how it has changed across the past 20 years, and what it means for people in their 60s today.
In this video we speak to Karen and Heidi who tell us their stories of living in their 60s.

Who gets to live longer and age well in our society, and crucially, how can societies adapt so we can all age better?
"Our latest report on this issue is focused on place-based inequalities and concluded that, quite simply, where you are born in England determines how long you live and how well you age." Says our Head of Research & Analysis, Dr Aideen Young.
The @wellcometrust have focused on this very topic for their 'The Coming of Age' exhibition.
The exhibition, which Ageing Better were involved in the development of, explores experiences and perceptions of ageing, from adolescence to later life, and asks how societies can adapt for us all to age better.

A huge congratulations to Sir Patrick for his tireless work over the years and this well deserved recognition.
Sir Patrick worked with Ageing Better for more than three years up to 2022, helping shape the way that the organisation addresses inequality in later life.
"A lot of us had career knockbacks because of our sexuality and that has an impact on your earning, and that has an impact on, therefore your housing. Because if you are having to take a job at a lesser pay grade because of homophobia, then you haven't got as much resource." Says Mindy, an older LGBT+ woman speaking about diversity in our State of Ageing report.
In our State of Ageing report, we found that many older LGBT+ people living in London are in a precarious financial situation, with 41% finding it difficult to manage financially. Although living in London comes with a high financial cost, which will play a role in these figures, it is also the case that a lifetime of discrimination affects someone’s ability to earn, save and plan for retirement.
This #PrideMonth we want to share the message that everyone should be treated equally, and those of all ages, regardless of sexuality or gender, enjoy good later lives.

How can we create communities that are both carer friendly and age-friendly?
This week is #CarersWeek, an annual opportunity to highlight the challenges faced by carers and the contributions that they make, writes our Head of Communities, Charlotte Lewis.
"This year’s theme is Building Carer Friendly Communities - showcasing the difference communities can make when they recognise carers, understand their needs and take practical action to support them.
When I heard about this year’s theme in the lead up to Carers Week, my ears immediately pricked up. As someone who spends their working life trying to create more age-friendly communities across the country, this theme caused me to reflect on how age-friendly communities could become carer friendly, and vice versa." Says Charlotte.

Yesterday, on #AgeWithoutLimitsDay, we hosted an event in Portcullis House in collaboration with @ersa_news to highlight the need to strengthen employment support for people in their 50s and 60s.
With around one million people in this age group wanting to work but locked out of the labour market, the event was an opportunity to bring this issue directly to Parliament and spark conversations about what needs to change.
We were pleased to be joined by colleagues from Triage and from the Southampton City Council's Adults Employment Hub, who shared insights from their work on the ground. We were also delighted that the Minister for Employment, Dame @DianaJohnsonMP, was able to drop in and engage with the event.
It was particularly encouraging to see strong interest from MPs, with many taking the time to discuss what works in practice and what this means for their local constituencies.
Thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed to the discussion!

As our @agewithoutlimit campaign celebrates its third Age Without Limits Day, our new polling reveals the continued widespread use of ageist phrases.
While some may argue they are just harmless fun, we know they help to underpin and entrench ageism within society which is why it would be better for all if they were no longer used.
"Negative assumptions about ageing are so commonplace that we’ve all probably heard comments describing older people as a bit of a dinosaur or over the hill. When you actually stop and think about those phrases, they’re loaded with negativity. Who would want to be considered as past their sell-by date and compared to a rotten and inedible piece of food?" Says our Co-lead for the Age Without Limits campaign. Harriet Bailiss.

We welcome DBT’s newly launched consultation on strengthening support for carers, including the introduction of paid leave. Our research shows that caring responsibilities often intensify with age, particularly for women, leaving many balancing ‘sandwich caring’ between dependent children and older parents.
Around 200,000 people aged 50 to State Pension age are currently out of work due to caring responsibilities. Strengthening workplace support for carers could play a vital role in closing the employment gap for older workers and reducing financial insecurity in later life.

We completely agree with this fantastic piece, David Smith. You highlight the issues of economic inactivity among the 50+ age group, and the challenges of finding work for people with long-term health issues or Disability and the huge impact of ageism in the workplace.
There is a crisis in youth unemployment and the government is right to dedicate significant time and resource to tackling this.
But as the article makes clear, there is also an employment crisis in the 50+ age group and currently there is no focus on this from the government.
If the government does want to deliver on its promises of economic growth, it has to solve these issues at both ends of the labour market and that requires age-specific, targeted and tailored approaches.
With more than one in three people in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole already aged 50 and over, planning for an age‑friendly future is essential.
Our latest case study explores how @BCPCouncil is doing just this by building a strong network of partners who share resources, expertise and lived experience. By working together and listening to voices from diverse communities, BCP is creating local environments where people can live and age well.

Today the government released their young people and work report. This report is an independent review of the increase in the number of young people who are not in education, employment or training (NEET).
“Alan Milburn is right to highlight a crisis in youth employment and the need for systemic reform.
“However, the government is being myopic in thinking that focusing all its efforts in solving the youth inactivity crisis will fix the labour market and the economy alone.
“There is an equally alarming crisis in the 50+ labour market where almost one million older workers would like to work but currently are not.
“How the UK lags behind other countries, the need for greater flexibility and health support from employers, spending more resource on employment support in order to reduce benefit spending - much of what the report says about the issues in the youth labour market applies equally to older workers.
“Without focussing equal resource and reform to this section of the labour market, the government will not help employers fill their labour and skills gaps or deliver the multigenerational workforces that studies have shown are the most productive to drive economic growth.”
Dr Andrea Barry, Deputy Director for Work at the Centre for Ageing Better
