🚨 NEW PODCAST: Coronations & Defenestrations: Choosing (and losing) Tory Leaders
In the latest edition of our podcast Since Attlee & Churchill, @richardmarcj interviews me about my new book on the Tory leadership.
We explore how the Conservative Party has picked – and ditched – its leaders from the age of Disraeli to the present day.
Was the old system of "emergence" really as undemocratic as is often portrayed?
Why did Harold Macmillan's handling of the 1963 succession bring that system to an end?
And did William Hague's 1998 reforms create the instability that has seen Conservative leaders come and go with increasing speed?
Hear us discuss those issues - and more - wherever you get your podcasts. Just search Since Attlee & Churchill.

It’s here! @LeeDavidEvansUK’s book on the most efficient users of the political guillotine. As the Tories settle down to a period of consistent leadership after the tumult of Cameron to Sunak (move over French Revolution!) I’m looking forward to sitting back and getting into this

I was delighted to gift a copy of Coronations & Defenestrations to @GylesB1 yesterday, when he was hosting the annual Heath lecture at @Arundells.
Gyles' diary contains one of the best accounts of the dramatic 1995 Tory leadership election, which I examine in the book.
"On the face of it, a coronation is good news for an incoming leader... [but] a look at the most recent leaders to emerge unchallenged suggests it’s unlikely to be all roses for Burnham."
I explain why on @CapX. 👇

Just came across this nice review of my book (Decolonizing African Agriculture) in the journal Economic Botany (@agendapub , @ColumbiaUP , @EdinburghUP )
My copy of @LeeDavidEvansUK’s new @agendapub book has arrived!
Unfortunately, I haven’t found a bust of Disraeli to mark the occasion, but I can’t wait to read this sparkling account of how the Conservative Party selects (and disposes of) its leaders.
Congratulations, Lee! 🎉

Happy publication day @LeeDavidEvansUK!🥳
'Coronations and Defenestrations' provides much needed clarity and insight on the complex and mysterious world of Conservative leadership elections.
A great work of political history, based on archival research and interviews with some of the key players in the Conservative Party, including leaders and leadership candidates.
Out NOW 🚨🚨🚨

An exciting moment: the first copies of my book, ‘Coronations & Defenestrations’, arrived today!
It’s the story of how the Conservatives have picked (and ditched) their leaders throughout history, to be published by @agendapub (@EdinburghUP) at the end of this month.
New podcast:
I spoke to @hlinehan on @IrishTimes Inside Politics about why climate action has to mean higher living standards, not higher costs, and whether regulation really is to blame for our failure to build.
The trilemma, unpacked.
