Sharing this because we’re losing our minds a bit right now. I’m seeing this kind of thing frequently. People r seeing monsters under bed. Covid & cabin fever & Trumpism fears aren’t helping.
People get things wrong sometimes, & social media is a terrible way to communicate.
@mtaibbi "Have a dialogue."
Not "discuss" or "debate," which are nounless, transitive, and could, heaven forbid, achieve something. Better to be in an interminable state of "dialogue." Usually accompanied by a delicious dash of reprimand: "We are long overdue to have a dialogue about..."
@RachelBock9 Not so sure about (2). Unencouraged and untrained to take charge of their own lives, men *will* succumb to women who volunteer to do it for them. It's a bad bargain, but a bargain all the same, doubly satisfying the man's desire for a leader and a mate.
Aristotle argued that women were defective humans and some folks were natural slaves.
Yet, I teach Aristotle and label my own views broadly Aristotelian. It is possible to appreciate what is true and good while discarding what is false, people.
Supposedly we live in this nightmarish fascist hell-state, but roaming bands of left-wing activists can just topple whatever historical statues they want seemingly without consequence
@KellyRDay19 Kelly, to combat the bigotry of your tweet, I am announcing the creation of #CartoonDay, where we help end the stigma surrounding cartoons. #MeToon
My local coffee shop is “reopening“ tomorrow. They installed a small window for takeout. But the point was never the coffee. I enjoyed sitting inside, hearing people talk. I liked being surrounded by strangers all seeking some kind of refuge, like me, with coffee as the excuse.
@EPoe187@JonahDispatch Don't try to take this away from me, Professor. Getting served by Bo Winegard is an important prelude to getting dunked on by @MrAndyNgo and side-eyed by @clairlemon, and then my YEAR will be complete!
@caylanford@EPoe187@JonahDispatch How is the fanaticism "given?" Again, I think you are inferring definitions where none are or need be. I guess I'm a semantical minimalist. Let "ideologue" mean ideologue; we have other words for "changers" and "remakers." "Activist" comes to mind.
@caylanford@EPoe187@JonahDispatch Pretty sure that is an unreliable definition. Is there anything in the root words ideo or -logy that suggests fanaticism? If anything, ideology ought to basically mean "the study of ideas."
@EPoe187@JonahDispatch Since he appears too modest to do it himself, I’ll be the one to point out that, in his Tyranny of Clichés, Mr. Goldberg makes a memorable case for rehabilitating the word “ideology,” to go from “inflexibility” to “consistency” in thinking. Hope I have this right, sir. Big fan.
