Edmund White, 1940 - 2025: 'White was diagnosed HIV+ in 1984. “I wasn’t surprised, but I was very gloomy… I kind of pulled the covers over my head and thought: ‘Oh gee, I’ll be dead in a year or two’ … it turned out that I was a slow progressor.”’

Where did HIV stigma come from, and why does it persist?
For Jonathan Blake, the seeds were sown by a government campaign, with the resulting panic weaponised by reactionary voices.
"The memorial is going to be a place where people can go and reflect, educate themselves, feel peace, talk to people." - Mzz Kimberley, @AIDSMemoryUK
The HIV and Aids memorial is supported by @MayorofLondon

‘Stop the stigma… because #stigma kills.’
#HIVstigma stops people testing, and so stops them accessing medication and support.
Why, in the age of better medication and U=U, do we allow #misinformation about #HIV to persist?
If we are to stop new transmissions of HIV, we will have to first tackle HIV stigma.
We spoke to our founder, Ash, and Mina and Jonathan, members of our Affected Communities Advisory Board, about their experiences.

Last week’s @LondonAssembly report recognised the role of The AIDS Memorial in London in supporting the Mayor + #London Councils' commitment to reach zero new #HIV infections, zero HIV-related stigma + zero HIV-related deaths by 2030.
⬇️@ashkotak on the need for memorialisation.
Great to see so many members of the @LondonAssembly and the AMUK team gathered at the proposed site of the Memorial this morning for the launch of ‘Getting to zero by 2030: HIV in London’.
Following an investigation into HIV in London, #AssemblyHealth has published its report. It finds that HIV stigma remains a major issue in the capital. Read the full report here: https://t.co/t8wQM4RNrN
