The scenes unfolding in Delhi today, and the scale of repression being unleashed against peaceful protesters, bring back painful memories of the Emergency that I lived through.

All political leaders, students and young protesters detained in Delhi and across the country must be released immediately.

I strongly condemn the TVK Government in Tamil Nadu for acting as an extension of the BJP and unleashing police repression against protesting students.

The Union Government must immediately end its assault on the youth who are peacefully exercising their democratic right to protest. Dissent is not a crime, and democracy cannot survive by silencing those who rise to defend it.

The resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar is non-negotiable. Beyond his resignation, all the damage done to the institutional framework of the Election Commission must be undone, and its independence and integrity restored.

We are all constitutionalists here. The entire INDIA block, opposition parties, student and youth organisations like IYC, NSUI, AISA, SFI, AISF has operated and existed within the constitutional framework of the country. We are not spending our youth speaking for our rights facing incessant abuse because we don’t like our country- it is we do it because we love it. And we love it deeply.

Article 19 of the Indian constitution gives us the right to protest, freedom of speech and expression and freedom to assemble peacefully. The basic we ask is to let us express our dissent in the designated protest area.

The question now is:
What is the BJP so scared of?
Why are they protecting Gyanesh Kumar to the extent they have used the entire state infrastructure to protect this one man?
How much more do they have to hide?
How deep is their treason?

I condemn this EXPLOITATION of our forces and state resources. Our forces do not exist for you to use them as your personal militia only so you avoid accountability and stay in power.

Let no one brainwash that our protest is against India. Our protest is against those who are in power working against Indians and their interests and constitutional rights.
