Sharing a milestone that fills our hearts with immense gratitude.
Today, we watched our son, Aujaswi, receive the University Gold Medal from the Chief Justice of India (Who is also Chancellor of NUJS) for securing Rank 1 at NUJS Kolkata. 🎓
To be honoured with the Dr Madhav Menon University Gold Medal, named after the father of modern legal education, is a dream come true.
Beyond being the overall topper, earning Gold Medals in 7 individual subjects is a testament to his relentless dedication to the law.
The road was long, but seeing his hard work recognized at the highest level makes every late night worth it.
Proud is an understatement! ❤️⚖️

सबसे ख़राब Anand Vihar: PM2.5 58 µg/m³ (WHO से 4 गुना), PM10 270 µg/m³ (WHO से 6 गुना)।
2) Chandni Chowk के स्थानीय स्रोतों पर कार्रवाई + स्वास्थ्य-चेतावनी।
3) AQI लक्ष्य WHO मानकों की ओर कठोर किए जाएँ।

Today 54 years ago Indira Gandhi delivered her truly historic and perhaps most memorable address at the first UN Conference on the Human Environment that had begun in Stockholm on June 5th, 1972, that is marked as World Environment Day. She was only one of two heads of government to speak on the occasion—the other being the host prime minister.
Indira Gandhi’s speech is widely considered to be one of the four milestones in the global discourse on the environment—the others being the publication of Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring in 1962, Paul Ehrlich’s The Population Bomb in 1968 and MIT/Club of Rome’s The Limits to Growth in early 1972. It is still universally recalled, quoted and published. The speech ends by her recalling Verse 35 from the Prithvi Sukta in the Atharva Veda which, in translation, reads “What of thee I dig out, let that quickly grow ever, / Let me not hit thy vitals or thy heart.”
What is, however, not generally known is that her speech circulated at the Conference also contained the full text of Ashoka’s Major Pillar Edict which is without doubt the very first environmental proclamation by a ruler anywhere in the world. Given that she was speaking at the height of the Vietnam War she also drew the world’s attention to Ashoka’s Rock Edict where he deeply regrets the carnage of his military conquests. She drew pointed attention to the environmental havoc being created by the war in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.
The link to the speech as circulated at Stockholm that contains these Edicts missed in all the subsequent published versions including the official volumes of her speeches as PM is here:

I lost my father to the politics of hate and division. I will not lose my beloved country to it too.
Love will conquer hate. Hope will defeat fear. Together, we will overcome.
Respected @Jairam_Ramesh ji — as Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Environment, this is for your kind attention.
The government says Delhi's air improved in 2025. We removed the weather — every hour of five years, 35,000 decision trees — and here is the full reckoning:
❗ This December was 56 points worse than last December. The government's answer: "still winds." Strip the weather away and still winds explain only about half — the other roughly 24 points are real, and they belong to the government, not the sky.
❗ December 2025: AQI 362 observed, 350 even after removing weather. With December 2023, the most polluted December since at least 2021 — on both counts.
❗ This winter was 29 points worse than last (observed); our estimate puts about 7 of those as real deterioration. The "winter is easing" headline was manufactured from mismatched windows.
❗ July–December — the GRAP season this whole machinery exists for: +1.2% observed, +0.8% weather-removed. Nothing. Five GRAP seasons since 2021, no real improvement; our estimate, about 20 points worse.
❗ The government's biggest claim — 2025's annual "improvement" — rests on one month: January 2024 was the most stagnant January in eight years (wind just 6.6 km/h vs 8–9 km/h every other January from 2018 to 2025; 17 calm days; 1 day of rain).
❗ Nitrogen dioxide up 7.4%; ozone up 11%.
Delhi still breathes 2.4 times the national standard and nearly 20 times the WHO limit. Beijing is at 29; Delhi's winter, 163 — five and a half times worse. The government's own table: annual AQI 209, 209, 204, 209; PM2.5 98, 100, 105 — rising. The promise was "marked improvement, year on year." Their own numbers break it. The cost (AQLI, University of Chicago): about 10 years of life.
Three demands: a weather-normalised seasonal scorecard every quarter; China-style binding year-on-year stubble-season targets; and a white paper on December's ~24 real points and winter's 29-point slide.
Breathing is a fundamental right — not a convenience.
Respected @Jairam_Ramesh ji,
On World Environment Day, 5th June, I set out to answer one question with data — not rhetoric: is Delhi's air actually improving, or does the weather just keep taking both the blame and the credit?
Since then, I have run one of the most rigorous independent air-quality exercises ever attempted for Delhi:
▪️ 5 years 5 months of data — 1 January 2021 to 31 May 2026
▪️ 46 CPCB/DPCC monitoring stations, 7 pollutants, 8.6 million station-hours — every station-day quality-gated (minimum 16 of 24 valid hours)
▪️ Machine-learning "de-weathering" — 7 Boosted Regression Tree models, 35,000 decision trees, trained on wind, temperature, boundary-layer height and rainfall (with 6-hour and 24-hour lags)
▪️ Every station-hour re-predicted under 5 climatological weather scenarios — nearly 38 MILLION model predictions
▪️ Models validated on held-out data, cross-checked against CPCB's published CCR AQI, and confirmed by TWO independent de-weathering methods
▪️ AQI re-derived strictly through CPCB's own 2014 National AQI formula, and every season compared with the SAME season, year on year — apples to apples, weather removed
The findings are alarming. Remember: the CPCB AQI is CAPPED at 500 — the scale itself cannot express how bad it truly gets. Yet even on this capped scale, with the weather's mercy stripped away, Delhi's pollution levels are NOT decreasing:
❗ Not ONE of Delhi's four seasons is on a sustained path of real improvement, 2021→2026.
❗ At least one widely celebrated "improvement" turns out to be pure weather — not policy.
❗ And there is one winter-2026 number the government will have to answer for.
The complete findings — season by season, year by year, including a direct comparison with 31 Chinese provincial capitals — are in my animated report releasing on 13th June. The teaser is attached.
Sir, as Chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Environment, Forests & Climate Change, I request you to take up Delhi's deteriorating air quality with the Union Home Minister — Delhi being a Union Territory comes directly under him, both the state government's machinery and the garbage-collecting MCD; with the Union Minister of Housing & Urban Affairs — under whom the DDA and the Delhi Metro function; and with the Union Environment Minister — under whom the CPCB and the national clean-air mission sit. This emergency cuts across all three ministries, and accountability keeps falling in the gaps between them.
Delhi is not asking for favourable winds. It is asking for governance.

Jawaharlal Nehru became Prime Minister of India on August 15, 1947 presiding over a stellar Cabinet - the likes of which have rarely been seen in the world. Over the next five years, modern India came into being.
Over 560 princely states were integrated peacefully into the Indian Union, the Constitution of India was debated and adopted, zamindari was abolished, reservations for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes were put in place, a number of multipurpose irrigation-cum-power projects were launched, the infrastructure for science and technology capability was established (including in nuclear energy), and India emerged as a force in global affairs. Electoral rolls bearing 170 million registered voters were prepared to ensure universal adult franchise and free India’s first General Elections were held between October 1951 and February 1952.
The 1947-52 record of achievements of India with Nehru as PM and in which stalwarts like Sardar Patel, Dr. Ambedkar, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, C. Rajagopalachari, and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad played such a pivotal role is now sought to be erased by Mr. Modi who has a pathological fixation on Nehru. He may have passed a self-proclaimed and dubiously invented milestone today but he is a millstone around India’s neck, presiding as he is over the Murder of Democracy in India. The very same establishments of democracy - an independent Election Commission and a sacrosanct voter list - are now threatened. Scientific temper has been erased through the destruction of our educational institutions - as exposed most recently by the NEET-CBSE scandals. Reservations for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes have been weakened through privatisation and nefarious instruments like ‘Not Found Suitable.’
And while Nehru won in 1952, 1957, and 1962 with a hugely decisive majority, Mr. Modi did NOT secure even a simple majority by a considerable margin in 2024 and had to hurriedly convene a NDA meeting bypassing the BJP Parliamentary Party to anoint himself as PM. 2024 was most certainly not a mandate for Him.

Rejecting Smt. Meenakshi Natarajan ji’s nomination to the Rajya Sabha is a blatant attempt by the BJP to destroy the democratic process in a clandestine manner. The allegation of any error or non-disclosure in her nomination is complete humbug and a desperate attempt to snatch a seat from the INC.
They stooped so low as to reject her nomination when they realised that their dirty tricks to compromise our INC MLAs is going to fail.
This shows the BJP’s hollow commitment to the Constitution and democracy. At every step of the way, they are hell-bent on Vote Chori - one way or another.
We will not take this daylight robbery of democracy lying down, and will fight this legally as well as politically on the streets tooth-and-nail.
Dear Sarthak, I think this country first owes you an apology. And then it owes you a salutation. In my career, I have seen a few change makers / disruptors. @sachin_rt rewrote the rules of test match batting and one day opening , @Vaibhavsooryava has completely rewritten the rules of t-20 cricket , you, Sarthak have completely rewritten how we will ever look at an 18 year old student. The fact that senior journalists can only ask you such tired questions as you batting for opposition, exposes only our breed even more. More power to you. 👍👍👍#cbseclass12result

Delhi's air isn't getting better - the weather is just masking it.
Strip out favourable weather (de-weathering, our 7-pollutant hybrid model) and NOT ONE of Delhi's 7 pollutants actually improved over last year.
De-weathered YoY:
- SO2 +23%
- PM10 +13%
- CO +7%
Today every one of 43 monitoring stations breached WHO limits for BOTH PM2.5 and PM10 - and India's own NAAQS too. SO2 is up 17% across the city; one station spiked +248% - the signature of diesel gensets & industry, not household fuel.
Worst station: IHBAS - PM2.5 at 91 ug/m3, 6x the WHO limit and 42% higher than last year.
WHO warns SO2 at this level triggers asthma attacks and airway inflammation.
3 demands to the government:
1. Immediate FGD/scrubber audit of thermal power plants & DG sets
2. Targeted source action + public health alerts in the worst-hit IHBAS area
3. Make the WHO limit a legal standard
Clean-looking air is the gift of weather, not policy.

It was mid-2022. The country was still shaking off COVID. Nobody quite knew if the worst was behind us. And the political mood everywhere was the same, a kind of resigned certainty. "Waste of time, brother. Ram Mandir opens in early 2024. Elections in April. It is going to be a sweep."
Back then, I had just been made in charge of the war room for the Karnataka Assembly elections. I was wondering where we would find the courage, the technique, the language to push back against a narrative that had been years n the making.
That was when I 1st heard he had decided to walk.
Across the entire length and breadth of this country. On foo
My first thought, honestly, was, not a great idea!
His close advisers said the same. Too cumbersome. Too dangerous. Someone even proposed a hybrid-walk some of it, take vehicles for the rest. He refused every suggestion. He had one belief: that truth, when it moves on foot and looks people in the eye, will communicate what no war room ever can.
I want to tell you about one day during that walk.
Through some logistical error, the camp was erected around four kilometres ahead of the designated end point. It was hot. It was humid. The yatris who had arrived earlier were already resting.
When he reached the camp and realised what had happened, he didn't say a word. He turned back and kept walking. 4 kms. No one is ahead of him. No crowd. No cameras making a moment of it. Just a man, a road, and a principle he refused to compromise on even when no one was watching.
That image has never left me.
Now, Prof Ramachandra Guha has been writing about Rahul Gandhi's shortcomings with remarkable dedication for years. Pages and pages. Column after column. From someone who claims to be disillusioned, the output is almost impressive in its volume.
If he is truly irrelevant, truly finished, truly a lost cause, someone should ask Mr Guha why he cannot stop writing about him.
Mr Guha once wrote seriously about what it means to be an honest intellectual in a democracy. Noam Chomsky made a point that cuts close to home here, the most dangerous intellectual is not the one on anyone's payroll, but the one who arrives, through apparently careful analysis, at exactly the conclusion those in power find most convenient.
We are 10 years into something serious in ths country. Institutions that should be independent are not. Newsrooms that once asked hard questions now ask different ones. Dissent is treated as disruption.
Many of the people now writing sharp pieces about RG's leadership once wrote sharp pieces about exactly this machinery. They were right then. The question worth asking is, what changed?!
Let me be plain about what this moment actually is for us.
This is not an election cycle. This is a war b/w two visions of what this country is and who it belongs to.
One vision believes this country is for everybody. That its diversity is not a problem to be managed but a truth to be celebrated. The other operates on fear & hierarchy, with a precision and discipline that Mr Guha, from his comfortable cocoon, seems to find more analytically interesting than morally troubling.
Mr Guha can remain on his pedestal of privilege. That is his right.
But millions of people who have no such luxury, who live with the consequences of this moment every single day, have already made their judgement. They are following the one person they know will never leave their side. The one person they know will fight this till the end.
Not because he is perfect. Not because he wins every battle. But because he is the one person who walks kilometres when no one is watching.
History will record ths moment. It will record who stood where when the fire was visible & the smoke was being diagnosed. It will record who had the courage to walk & who had the comfort to write. It will record the millions who followed a man into uncertainty because they trusted his spine more than they feared the road ahead.
Truth does not need a column!
