When God has a plan…

From selling bhatura chole at Vivek Public School in 1989,
to opening Lawrence Garden Banquet from the back of my house in Amritsar in 1990.
In 1991, I chose culinary arts—
a decision that embarrassed almost everyone except my grandmother.

There were years of humiliation I rarely speak about.
Moments that nearly broke me.
In 2000, when my banquet was torn down, I almost gave up.
Instead, I moved to the United States and started over.

Cleaning homes.
Selling food on the streets of TriBeCa.
Sleeping at Grand Central.
Experiencing homelessness at NYC Rescue.
Sleepless nights.
Being called “Curry Boy” on the 7 train.

And still, I kept going.
From there…
8 Michelin stars.
Then losing myself again.
Then starting over—one last time as a promise to my sister—with Bungalow.

And now…
TIME100 Most Influential People in the World 2026.
I’m still trying to process it.
The journey continues.

For nearly five decades, Maoist violence cast a long and gory shadow across India’s heartland, eroding state authority, terrorising tribal communities, and normalising insurgent brutality in the name of revolution. What began with the Naxalbari uprising of 1967 metastasised into the country’s gravest internal security threat, sustained by ideological indulgence, policy drift, and moral confusion — until the Indian state finally decided to confront red terror with clarity, resolve, and force.

In Naxal Terror Vanquished, I chronicle India’s decisive push to defeat Maoist insurgency as the government moves towards a Naxal-free Bharat by 31 March 2026. The inflection point in this long drawn battle came under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, whose comprehensive strategy produced transformative outcomes: a near 100 per cent decline in violence since 2014, a drastic contraction of affected districts from 100 in 2014 to barely 2 now, nearly 1000 Naxals killed and 4000 surrendered in just the last 4 years.

Yet the story does not end with security operations alone. The book also warns of the continuing influence of the Urban Naxal ecosystem in sections of academia that has long provided oxygen to militant networks. At the same time, it examines the vast economic potential of nearly a hundred formerly Naxal-affected districts now poised to join India’s developmental mainstream — and what their transformation could mean for the nation’s larger Viksit Bharat ambitions.

Combining security, politics, and economic transformation, Naxal Terror Vanquished offers sharp insights for readers interested in national security, governance, and India’s development trajectory.
