Introducing My Football Club, Ibadan United FC.

I’ve always loved the game of football. As you all know, I’m a die-hard fan of Shooting Stars, a club I have supported for over 40 years, right from when I was a kid.

It’s a club I even sponsored for a few years at one point.

However, I’ve always wanted to own my own football club. But I didn’t want to have a club in Ibadan that would play against Shooting Stars.

About five years ago, my friend, @biolakazeem and I came up with the idea of establishing one in Lekki, Lagos, where I have a home and where the head office of my businesses is located.

So, we formed Lekki United and competed in the NLO, the third tier of the Nigerian football league.

After about two years, European scouts started noticing some of our players and began approaching us about collaborations which includes taking them abroad.

That was when it dawned on me.

My people in Egbeda/Ona-Ara Federal Constituency, my people in Ibadan, and indeed Oyo State in general, should be the ones benefiting from this opportunity.

That was when I decided to rebrand the club and move it to Ibadan.

The issue of playing against Shooting Stars should not be a problem. In fact, we can even help Shooting Stars. The club can serve as a pipeline for talent to the Oluyole Warriors and to clubs abroad. More importantly, it is a pathway to help talented footballers in my constituency and across Oyo State realise their dreams.

So, here we are.

Ibadan United Football Club is here. We play in the 3rd Tier of Nigerian Football, the NLO

There are no blanket rules. It depends on individual plans and ambition. I’m an investor in the Nigerian stock market and here’s what I think.

1. For transfer of shares (for example, in case you pass), using a company makes sense. The company owns the shares so when you transfer ownership of the company, the beneficiary owns all assets.

2. If you want to borrow against the shares or raise capital, this route makes more sense than personal.

3. For tax purposes, I prefer using personal name. It’s more complex with a company.

4. Management issues: For a company, filing NRS returns, audit etc, it’s cumbersome.

Like I said, there are no hard and fast rules. My general principle is that under N1B, you can still keep in your name.

Yes. Since 2007. Initially, only European players were eligible. Reason Pele, Maradona etc never won it. Then in the mid 90s, it was expanded to all nationalities AS LONG AS THEY PLAY IN EUROPE. Then George Weah won it. From 2007, any player, playing for any club anywhere in the world, became eligible.

@Omojuwa I find myself a in that condition a lot. It’s always annoying. Sometimes (if they inform well ahead of time) I buy a new ticket and keep the business for another time.

I agree with you. There is a particular airline that does this a lot. I however accept it because I fly Lagos Abuja route like 80 times a year so I apply the discount to when I’m using them again.

I had to leave Lagos for Abuja yesterday evening, but I needed to be back in Lagos first thing this morning. So I booked an airline I normally would not fly, purely for their early arrival.

I paid for business class. This morning, they put me in economy and offered a discount on my next flight as compensation. That is the issue. I do not fly this airline. I only flew them this morning because of an unusual schedule.

When a passenger pays for business class and an airline delivers economy, the correct response is simple: refund the difference. @mikeachimugu01 . You are doing a lot of great work, this system must be looked into. It is a scam in my book. They are eating their cake and having it.

Offering me a ‘discount’ on a future flight is not compensation. I don’t feel compensated, I feel cheated. They are keeping my money and calling it a favour.

It may not look like a lot of money. That is not the point. Nobody likes being cheated, and that is exactly how this feels. I hope this changes. Airlines compensate people with cash for flight delays elsewhere, here I can’t even get my money back for being served less than I paid for.

Small things like this get on my nerves.

Ibadan's unique chieftaincy elevation system has been a revelation to me. In less than two years, I've joined @akinalabi to celebrate three different elevations—with many more still to come. A remarkable tradition.
