Ugh. All movies are not fundamentally, unavoidably political. They are simply artistic products with loosely planned ambitions of commercial recognition that seek an audience. Films only become political when public stances are attached.
Maggie Gyllenhaal called films “fundamentally, unavoidably political” earlier this year at the Venice Film Festival. @TheNYFF artistic director Dennis Lim says he “agrees with that statement.”
“I think all films are political. Even to say that one is apolitical is kind of a political position to take. To be human, to be alive in the world, is political. Cinema of all the art forms is unavoidably political. We’re reflecting the world; we’re responding to the world. The most urgent, meaningful films today are engaged with the realities of contemporary existence.”

Into The Wild meets Blood Diamond? Heart of the Beast is very good. It's not high on originality until you think about just how much the dog contributes to the film's dynamic. I'd have ended it differently but it's easily one of the Top 10 films of 2026.

'But The Main News Tonight' premieres in #edfringe in August. It's my 26th indie feature. I doubt it will sell a ticket. It should have been on stage first but was cheaper to film. It ticks no boxes to appeal to media because it's 100% original.

Ah, I remember this buzz and excitement. Never had enough money to upgrade until my broken Sony HVRA1P forced the issue in Dec 2010 after completing my 2nd feature...by that time the crop sensor 1080p Canon EOS60D at just £800 had launched. At least 13 features shot on that!
The Canon 5D Mark II was released in 2008. It was the first DSLR camera to deliver full-frame 1080p video. A game-changing moment.
It unleashed a new era of shallow focus and remarkably clean low-light imagery.
In 2009, I tested the updated firmware that finally enabled 24fps recording to match the same cadence as 35mm film.
A very empowering time for low-budget filmmakers.
All these directors drive on about how easy it is to get something made but they forget they're in the business of market driven genre content. Artistically, the World makes so much more that isn't in the zeitgeist which gets ignored.
After 20+ years of religiously buying Rode microphones I've just found out that the '10 year warranty' is actually a load of old shit & I've been sold magic beans for years. On principle I might have to sell all my Rode equipment (that's a lot of mics) & switch to other brands.
If AI is so great why is Adobe Premiere such an absolute pile of dog shit? It was working fine but now after turning off media analysis...it's been spinning the beachball of death on every load and I can't even get close to editing the project. Total joke. Grr...
Visually, Practical Magic 2 looks terrible. It's got the Netflix grime but coupled with a dim projector & an auditorium already lit up like a Xmas tree it's a visual mess. The original cast are great but the new additions are just woefully miscast.

Why does Adobe Premiere take hours to return to a state of any kind of usefulness? Year in, year out it's the same set of problems. It's as if they mess this program up deliberately....oh, wait.

Thanks @loureviewsblog for the coverage and observations here. This is why I always screen a 'premiere' cut - you look out for the feedback and address it with a few choice cuts!

Collateral Damage.
Easily the best raw ensemble acting I've seen in EdFringe in years. The Fringe used to be full of gritty plays like this but realism is a lost art to 'me' culture.
