⏰Join us next week at our online learning event, 'Dignity and Choice'.
All of us working to support people facing alcohol issues are focussed on reducing harm and promoting recovery. It is an uncomfortable truth, however, that, in some cases, recovery is unlikely and a person’s health will continue to worsen. We’ll be looking at how to raise end-of-life issues with clients and their loved ones and more with a variety of experienced speakers.

Did you know the drink driving limit hasn’t changed in the UK since 1967 and that it is the highest in Europe? 🚗
There is clear evidence that a person’s ability to drive is affected by consuming any amount of alcohol. The Government is currently consulting on road safety. This is our chance to push for a clearer rule that says: if you drink, don’t drive.🤚
You can help us to make this change!📢
Using our quick email template, ask the Transport Minister to speak with us. It only takes a minute to add your voice, and it could help prevent avoidable deaths and injuries on our roads.👇

Sometimes a new term or label emerges to describe our drinking. One in recent conversation is 'grey area drinking'.
You may have come across this term in newspapers or lifestyle magazines.
But just what does it mean, and is it actually helpful?🤔

As January closes, Joe Marley, Executive Director of Marketing and Communications at @AlcoholChangeUK UK, reflects on the impact of the @dryjanuary® challenge with @InstAlcStud and looks at how we are ensuring our behaviour change programme helps more people to reach their goals year-round.
Joe separates fact from fiction, challenges misinformation and, in a world where big alcohol brands shout the loudest, celebrates those who decide to make a change to drink less, or not at all.

The @DHSCgovuk published its new National Cancer Plan today, coinciding with #WorldCancerDay.
We are hearing from cancer charities that the National Cancer Plan contains some strong measures, when it comes to screening, diagnosis and treatment. What's missing from the Plan, however, are any new measures targeting alcohol harm to prevent cancer.
The evidence is clear that alcohol consumption increases our risk of cancer, even when drinking alcohol at low levels. Yet, public awareness of the link between alcohol and cancer remains low. This is because the alcohol industry is working hard on preventing us from knowing the whole truth about the link between cancer and their products.
It's clear there is more change needed to ensure early prevention of cancer. The Government can do this by making our environment less alcohol-centric and reducing the affordability, availability, and marketing of alcohol, alongside mandatory alcohol labelling, to improve our health.

Minimum unit pricing (MUP) is here to stay, in Wales at least. Today, Members of @WelshGovernment / @LlywodraethCym – voted to keep the minimum price for alcohol that was introduced in 2020, and to increase it from 50p to 65p per unit.
Pricing alone cannot solve every alcohol problem and effective forms of treatment for those most vulnerable must also be improved, but by removing the cheapest, strongest drinks from the market, MUP will continue to make a significant contribution to reducing alcohol harm.

Clever tricks to make things disappear 🪄
A new FOI study from @InstAlcStud shows how the alcohol industry pressured ministers and government departments to successfully remove proposed alcohol marketing restrictions from England's 10 Year Health Plan - plans which would shift alcohol out of the spotlight and reduce harm for millions of people.
To ensure we as a society are protected from alcohol harm, public health policy must not be interfered with by the alcohol industry.

“I’m just going to have one drink, I’m driving.” 🗯️🚗
While the legal drink driving limit is not zero, even small amounts of alcohol impair our ability to drive safely. The safest, simplest option is to avoid alcohol altogether if there’s any chance we may be getting behind the wheel.
Last week we were glad to hear the @transportgovuk published a new Road Safety Strategy. The Strategy lists a number of reforms and plans, including a consultation on lowering the legal drink driving limit in England and Wales, which would represent the first change to this policy since 1967!
So, if you're thinking about 'just having one drink', perhaps consider one of the many alcohol-free options that are now available to us in many bars, pubs and restaurants.
