China’s peak intelligence agency secretly reorganised in 2018, pushing political security, overseas protection, big data and AI up its priority list. My new paper with @HENTY30634559 documents what’s known about the changes to the MSS: https://t.co/yAfsN8iOqx
Japanese edition of Spies and Lies just came out! Including an additional chapter about MSS and Chinese military networks in Japan. @masatheman@kenji_minemura
I profiled John Garnaut, the former China journalist-cum-Australian government official who contributed to a global China policy shift. Now, he is teaming up with Matt Pottinger & reinventing himself as a China whisperer for the private sector:

Canada's brand new research security policy is a great step in the right direction. Here's now Canada can go one step further to keep pace with the Chinese Government's attempts to commandeer research. My op-ed with @M_Johnston1

Cda’s new research security policy is terrific, identifying sensitive technologies & PLA institutions we shouldn‘t partner with. Now we should address the PRC companies issue. @FP_Champagne @csiscanada @ISED_CA @CanadaFP https://t.co/WOQpS4SIUw
Good to see more attention on the MSS - hard to avoid as its stake in Chinese politics, data security and external affairs grows. https://t.co/qrw2bj5TtQ
If you want to learn more about how the MSS (China’s rough equivalent of the CIA or MI6) operates check out @alexjoske’s excellent book “Spies and Lies”.

How was China's top intelligence agency created? My first paper in a while dives deep into the varied origins of the MSS's provincial branches. Often overlooked, provincial state security agencies are behind the bulk of espionage and cyber operations. https://t.co/oUhePRxm3U
From my Louis Green Memorial Lecture last week in Melbourne, on China knowledge in the Australian university system and how the Xi era has radicalised Australian corporate international education.
Early integration between State Security and UF: senior officers of the Central Investigation Department, a foreign intel agency, were systematically covered as United Front Work Department officers. A unit of Guangdong diaspora affairs officials was moved into State Security.

My book Spies and Lies, about elite influence operations by China's Ministry of State Security, is out now on audible. (Also coming out in print in Chinese, Japanese and French soon...) https://t.co/q8iOrtJJxL
