Levon Aronian expressed his doubts about Ding Liren's ability to make a comeback after his painful loss in game seven by saying, "You really have to be an iron man." The Armenian star was convinced that Ding's defeat had left him with an insurmountable challenge. However, after four consecutive draws, Ding's nerves seemed to have stabilized somewhat. Nevertheless, missing out on a masterful win in game eight must have been depressing. For Ding to mount a late comeback, one of two things would need to occur: either a theoretical bombshell would have to be deployed that would give Ding an instant lifeline, or he would need assistance from Ian Nepomniachtchi, a player known for both his immense talent and his ability to engineer surprisingly abyssal breakdowns. Based on his opening choices after game eight, it appears that Ding may have run out of deeply-prepared ideas. Fabiano Caruana said this after game eleven: "Yesterday we saw a nearly perfect, one could say even perfect game of chess. But at the moment, Ding doesn't want a perfect game of chess. He wants a mess, he wants some blood. As [Mikhail] Tal said, you want to take your opponent into a deep dark forest and that's what Ding needs at the moment." Ding got exactly that in game twelve after 1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 d5 3.e3, the innocuous-looking Colle System, a favorite of Vladimir Kramnik at the top. After a slightly awkward 6…Bd7 and 8…Bg4 moment that is best left to opening gurus to explain, Nepomniachtchi outplayed Ding all the way up to 25…b5! Then, on the verge of converting a beautifully played game with Black and thus essentially securing the title, Nepomniachtchi rejected pragmatism (26…a6!) in favor of fantasy (26…b4), failed to keep his nerves in check, and began to play extremely fast in a chaotic position, with the evaluation bar jumping up and down like the elevators of Taipei 101. After the catastrophic 34…f5, the compelling camera images zooming in on Nepomniachtchi revealed a man who realized the magnitude of his remarkable flop. But it is a collapse that is not all that surprising, with a well-documented trail abounding in tales of brilliancy and tragedy. In the end, Ding did take Nepomniachtchi into a deep dark forest, but it happened with Nepomniachtchi's help. It remains to be seen if the latter will be able to deal with the swift switch of momentum. Like a Matryoshka doll, within this Ding versus Nepomniachtchi match, there is a Nepomniachtchi versus Nepomniachtchi mini-match. For the Russian to beat the Chinese, he has to win that inner contest first (FIDE/Stev Bonhage).
